美国华盛顿大学植物园(University of Washington Botanic Gardens,UWBG)由华盛顿植物园(Washington Park Arboretum)和城市园艺中心(Center for Urban Horticulture)组成。华盛顿植物园以生态地理、季相与分类收集组织游览路线,代表性分区包括太平洋联系花园、约瑟夫·A·维特冬季花园、林地花园、滨岸与福斯特岛、杜鹃谷、杜鹃花大道及日本庭园;城市园艺中心则形成从精细栽培花园到自然生境的连续空间,包含Soest草本展示花园、西雅图园艺俱乐部香味花园、McVay庭院、Goodfellow Grove与UW Farm等区域。
华盛顿植物园的主题花园
太平洋联系花园以加拿大西北、澳大利亚、中国、智利和新西兰等环太平洋植物为线索,12英亩范围内安排草地、森林与专题景观;其中新西兰森林约2.5英亩,收集代表7类植物群落的近1万株植物。约瑟夫·A·维特冬季花园以冬季花色、枝干、果实、常绿叶片和香味为观赏重点。杜鹃谷始于20世纪30年代末,结合杜鹃、玉兰、冷杉、蕨类及林下灌木;杜鹃花大道则沿约四分之三英里步道集中展示杜鹃、樱花、山茱萸和玉兰。3.5英亩日本庭园采用传统漫游式布局,以池塘、石景和季相植物构成独立园景。
植物收集与代表性植物
230英亩的华盛顿植物园保存来自世界各地的4万多株植物,并按主题花园、生态地理区域与分类群展示。核心收集包括亚洲枫树、桦树与杨树、山茶、山楂、冬青、杜鹃、落叶松、豆科、椴树、花楸、胡桃、金缕梅、木兰和栎类等。亚洲枫树收集中的纸皮枫(Acer griseum)、Acer rubescens等具有代表性;山茶园则集中呈现来自东亚的山茶属植物及不同花型、花色与栽培品种。植物数据库、互动地图和植物档案为现场识别与收集研究提供辅助。
城市园艺中心的实验性展示区
城市园艺中心约16英亩的景观园地与建筑,连接74英亩的联合湾自然区,展示从密集栽培到自然生境的过渡。Soest草本展示花园包含超过280种多年生植物、一年生植物和球根植物,通过8个不同土壤质地与光照条件的抬高花床,比较植物在砂壤土、黏壤土、全日照、半阴和节水灌溉条件下的表现。香味花园以嗅觉、色彩、鸟类活动与座椅体验为主题;UW Farm则是2.5英亩、由学生参与运营的城市农业活实验室与教育设施。
科研、保护与标本资源

Two Sites and Themed Gardens
The University of Washington Botanic Gardens (UWBG) brings together the Washington Park Arboretum and the Center for Urban Horticulture. The Arboretum organizes visitor experiences through ecogeographic, seasonal, and taxonomic collections, including Pacific Connections Garden, Joseph A. Witt Winter Garden, Woodland Garden, Shoreline and Foster Island, Rhododendron Glen, Azalea Way, and the Japanese Garden. The Center presents a transition from intensively cultivated gardens to natural habitat, with the Soest Herbaceous Display Garden, Seattle Garden Club Fragrance Garden, McVay Courtyard, Goodfellow Grove, and UW Farm.
Washington Park Arboretum Garden Districts
Pacific Connections Garden interprets plants from Cascadia, Australia, China, Chile, and New Zealand across a 12-acre landscape of meadows, forests, and themed plantings; its New Zealand Forest covers about 2.5 acres and represents seven plant communities with nearly 10,000 plants. The Winter Garden emphasizes winter flowers, bark, fruit, foliage, and fragrance. Rhododendron Glen combines rhododendrons with magnolias, firs, ferns, and woodland shrubs, while Azalea Way is a three-quarter-mile promenade of azaleas, flowering cherries, dogwoods, magnolias, and companion plants. The 3.5-acre Japanese Garden uses a traditional stroll-garden design with ponds, stones, and seasonal plantings.
Plant Collections and Living Accessions
The 230-acre Washington Park Arboretum holds more than 40,000 plants from around the world, displayed through thematic gardens, ecogeographic areas, and taxonomic collections. Core collections include Asian maples, birches and poplars, camellias, hawthorns, hollies, rhododendrons, larches, legumes, lindens, mountain ashes, walnuts, witch hazels, magnolias, oaks, and related groups. The Asian Maple Collection includes notable Acer griseum and Acer rubescens, while the camellia areas show East Asian species, cultivars, flower forms, and seasonal displays. Collections databases, interactive maps, and plant profiles support identification and documentation.
Urban Horticulture Demonstration Areas
The Center for Urban Horticulture combines a 16-acre landscaped site with the 74-acre Union Bay Natural Area, illustrating a gradient from intensive cultivation to wildlife habitat. The Soest Herbaceous Display Garden contains more than 280 herbaceous plants in eight raised beds that compare soil texture, light exposure, and water-wise irrigation. The Seattle Garden Club Fragrance Garden uses scent, color, birds, sound, and seating to create a sensory learning environment. UW Farm is a 2.5-acre student-powered urban farm, living laboratory, and education facility focused on urban agriculture and sustainability.
Research, Conservation, and Herbarium Evidence
UWBG research focuses on environmental horticulture, conservation biology, and restoration ecology. Washington Rare Plant Care and Conservation works with federal, state, and local partners on monitoring, ex situ conservation, reintroduction, propagation, and education for native rare plants; students and citizen scientists contribute to field activities. Faculty, visiting scientists, postdoctoral researchers, laboratories, and greenhouses associated with the Center support horticultural and ecological research. The Otis Douglas Hyde Herbarium preserves pressed specimens from the Gardens and research collections, providing long-term evidence for studying plant loss, invasive species, and climate-related phenology.
