花园概况

斯蒂林弗利特庄园花园与苗圃 (Stillingfleet Lodge Garden and Nursery) 位于英格兰北部约克郡斯蒂林弗利特村, 距约克城南约六英里, 由 Vanessa 与 John Cook 夫妇自 1974 年起打理至今, 是英国少见的家庭花园兼独立植物苗圃, 占地约四英亩, 已纳入皇家园艺学会 (RHS) 植物搜寻名录, 是约克周边口碑稳定的野生动物友好型花园之一。

历史由来

Vanessa 与 John 在 1974 年带着年幼的家人搬入斯蒂林弗利特庄园, 起初以有机种植与自给自足为目标; 孩子们逐渐长大之后, 他们开始把原本的菜地与草坪一一改造成现在的野生动物友好花园。Cook 夫妇在这片约四英亩的土地上连续种植四十多年, 围绕传统农舍开辟出多个主题花园, 把多年生植物、池塘、野花草甸与家庭菜园连成一个低维护、可持续的整体。

花园格局与特色

花园围绕传统农舍展开, 由一系列主题小园组成, 包括围屋花园、狭水道花园 (Rill Garden) 与长廊大道 (Avenue), 配上池塘、野花草甸、家庭菜园和一座小型温室苗圃区。园区刻意保留植物的种头供鸟雀取食, 限制秋冬修剪以保留昆虫栖息地, 并在角落留出供刺猬冬眠的落叶堆, 让小空间也能承载较高的生物多样性。园区几乎完全有机管理, 茶室与苗圃也延续同样的可持续理念, 是英式花园常见的低投入、多物种样板的代表。

植物收藏与苗圃

苗圃以多年生植物为主, 九成植株在庄园内自行繁育, 网站列出的可售植物达八百余种; 主营方向是耐寒老鹳草属 (hardy geraniums) 与肺草属 (Pulmonaria), 也兼顾斑叶植物与观赏草, 这一专长被皇家园艺学会植物搜寻收录, 与 Great Dixter、Beth Chatto Gardens 同列英国耐寒多年生植物的代表苗圃。访客可以先浏览网上的植物目录, 再实地对照苗圃实物选购, 也可以预约在工作日开放时段外上门取苗。

开放与服务

花园、苗圃与茶室每年大致自四月一日开放至九月三十日, 每周三、周五下午一时至五时, 加每月第一与第三个周末同时段向公众开放, 票务上成人七点五英镑、五至十六岁儿童二点五英镑, 仅到访苗圃或茶室免收入园费。园区内还设有茶室供应茶水与蛋糕, 常年配合艺术展览, 每年开设多场园艺与手工工作坊, 因场地有限常提前售罄; 因有家禽在园区内自由活动, 园方不接待普通犬只, 仅允许导盲犬进入。

Overview

Stillingfleet Lodge Garden and Nursery is a four-acre, organically managed wildlife-friendly family garden close to York, North Yorkshire, about six miles south of the city on the B1222. The garden and nursery have been run by Vanessa and John Cook since 1974 and are listed in the Royal Horticultural Society Plant Finder; together with a small plant nursery, a tearoom and a programme of seasonal workshops, they form one of the most consistent small wildlife gardens open to the public in the north of England.

History

Vanessa and John Cook moved to Stillingfleet Lodge in 1974 with their young family, originally aiming for an organic, self-sufficient smallholding. As the children grew up, the vegetable plots and lawns were gradually reworked into the themed wildlife-friendly garden seen today. Over more than forty continuous years of planting, the Cooks have built a sequence of themed rooms around the traditional farmhouse, combining perennial borders, a pond, a wildflower meadow and a productive kitchen garden into a low-input, sustainable whole.

Garden Layout and Features

The garden is arranged as a series of themed areas around the traditional farmhouse, including the formal cottage garden, the long Rill Garden and the tree-lined Avenue, together with a pond, a meadow, a vegetable garden and a small glasshouse area. Seed heads are deliberately left as winter food for birds, autumn cutting-back is held back to provide insect habitat, and hedgehog-friendly log piles are tucked into quiet corners, all working together to keep biodiversity high on a small site. The whole property is managed almost entirely under organic principles, and the same ethos is carried into the tearoom and nursery.

Plant Collection and Nursery

The on-site nursery specialises in unusual hardy perennials, with around ninety per cent of the plants sold raised in the garden itself and roughly 800 different plants listed online. Its main specialisms are hardy geraniums and pulmonarias, with a strong supporting range of variegated plants and ornamental grasses, and this range is recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society Plant Finder. Visitors can browse the online plant catalogue before visiting, compare plants in the garden and buy them in the nursery, and can also arrange to collect pre-ordered plants outside regular opening hours.

Opening and Services

The garden, nursery and tearoom open each year roughly from 1 April to 30 September, every Wednesday and Friday plus the first and third weekends of each month, from 13:00 to 17:00. Admission is £7.50 for adults and £2.50 for children aged 5–16, and entry is free for visitors who only come to the nursery or the tearoom during opening hours. A small tearoom serves tea and cake, the property hosts regular art exhibitions, and a programme of gardening and creative workshops is run each season, with popular dates often selling out well in advance; because a free-range poultry flock roams the garden, only assistance dogs are admitted.
