Amy Murray
官网常年供应的杂交与原生品种包括 Cypripedium ‘Anna Beckman’、’Birgit Pastel’、’Emil’、Fasciolatum × Aki Pastel、Frosch’s Alaskan Beauty、Frosch’s Harlequin、Frosch’s Mother Earth、Frosch’s Queen of the Mist、Gisela、x Alaskanum 等。 (Arisaema candidissimum、A. fargesii、A. sikokianum、A. triphyllum)、半夏(Pinellia tripartita ‘Green Dragon’)、秋牡丹类林地野花与芍药(Paeonia japonica)等,全部为适合北美温带林下环境的耐阴品种。
Hillside Nursery is a small family-run nursery in Ashfield, in the Hilltowns of Western Massachusetts (4 Norman Road, Ashfield, MA 01330, USA), founded in 1989 by Peter Joppe and now operated by Amy Murray, who joined the team in 2005 and took over full ownership after Peter’s retirement. The nursery specialises in the propagation and production of hardy lady-slipper orchids (Cypripedium) and select woodland wildflowers of the temperate forests of the Northern Hemisphere. All plants are raised 100% in nursery conditions — never wild-collected — and shipped twice a year, in early April and mid-October, while the plants are fully dormant.
Founding History and New Owner Amy Murray
Hillside Nursery was started in the late 1980s by Peter Joppe as a passion project, evolving from a personal collection into a printed catalogue hand-delivered to garden centres across New England. Online sales began in the early 2000s. Amy Murray, the current owner, was introduced to plants and propagation at the New England Wildflower Society (now Native Plant Trust) before joining Hillside in 2005. After Peter retired, Amy took over the business and has continued the hands-on approach to packing, customer communication, and stock-plant selection that long-time customers value. The nursery is located in the Hilltowns of Western Massachusetts — a transitional zone between northern hardwood and mixed conifer-hardwood forest that provides the cool, moist summers and cold winters that hardy Cypripedium and woodland wildflowers require.
Main Catalogue: Cypripedium and Woodland Wildflowers
The flagship of Hillside’s catalogue is the genus Cypripedium, the hardy temperate-zone lady-slipper orchids — distinct from the tropical Paphiopedilum and requiring a genuine cold dormancy. Hybrids and selections regularly available include ‘Anna Beckman’, ‘Birgit Pastel’, ‘Emil’, Fasciolatum × Aki Pastel, Frosch’s Alaskan Beauty, Frosch’s Harlequin, Frosch’s Mother Earth, Frosch’s Queen of the Mist, Gisela, and x Alaskanum. The nursery recommends that beginners start with multi-cross hybrids that show strong hybrid vigour, such as Michael, Gisela, Kentuckiense × Candidum, and Philipp. In addition to Cypripedium, the catalogue carries marsh orchids (Dactylorhiza — D. foliorella, D. majalis alba, D. majalis × foliosa, D. purpurella), woodland Arisaema species (A. candidissimum, A. fargesii, A. sikokianum, A. triphyllum), Pinellia tripartita ‘Green Dragon’, and select shade-garden perennials such as Paeonia japonica.
Cultivation Philosophy and Growing Tips
Hillside’s core principle is “100% nursery-raised, never wild-collected”: every plant is propagated on-site from seed, division, or tissue culture, never harvested from the wild. The free Growing Tips page distils successful cultivation into five factors — light, soil, mulch, fertiliser, and winter protection. Cypripedium prefer morning or evening sun with midday shade, evenly moist but well-drained soil (lime may be added to acidic soil; heavy clay should be replaced with sandy loam), a 3/4–1 inch pine-bark mulch topped with pine needles, and a second layer of bark, straw, or pine boughs once the ground has started to freeze — to be removed in spring. A single annual application of granular organic fertiliser, or 1/4-strength liquid fertiliser every 7–10 days from emergence through mid-August, is sufficient in most soils. Importantly, these are cold-climate orchids and the nursery does not recommend growing them indoors or over-wintering in a warm greenhouse.
Ordering, Shipping Schedule and Delivery Area
The nursery ships plants only twice a year, in early April (spring shipping) and the second and third weeks of October (fall shipping), and only while the plants are fully dormant to avoid transit damage. Spring orders open in early December; fall orders open in late July; the order deadline is one week before the ship date. In fall, the first week generally serves USDA zone 5 and colder, the second week zone 6 and warmer. Orders can be placed through the secure online shopping cart or by mailing a printable order form. The nursery accepts VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Apple Pay, and personal cheques; the card is charged at order placement to reserve the plants. Shipping is free within the United States, but the nursery does not ship outside the US or to Florida, Hawaii, or Idaho. Plants are dug, washed, and packed in bags with dampened potting mix inside reinforced boxes. Gift certificates are available year-round, and the email newsletter announces seasonal openings and new releases.
