Society Overview and History

The Japanese Rhododendron Society (JRS, Nihon Tsutsuji・Shakunage Kyōkai) is a nationwide association of Tsutsuji (azalea) and Shakunage (rhododendron) enthusiasts, founded in 1972 by hobbyist growers. It is a self-governing hobbyist body rather than a government-funded organization, and its day-to-day operations are funded by membership dues, journal subscriptions and activity fees. The society publishes twice-yearly bulletins, holds a national convention every two years and serves as a coordination centre for regional branches across Japan.

Members and Branch Structure

The society currently has roughly 700 members organized into 45 prefectural branches (todōfuken shibu). Members can join activities hosted by their local branch or attend society-wide training meetings. Each branch independently organizes local shows, study meetings and field trips, acting as the main point of contact between the society and azalea/rhododendron enthusiasts in its region. The society publishes two issues of its bulletin per year, edited by the headquarters editorial bureau, as a fixed channel for members to share cultivation notes, cultivar information and field observations.

National Conventions, Training Meetings and Overseas Tours

The society holds a national convention (zenkoku taikai) every two years, hosted in turn by local branches. It also organizes regional training meetings such as the 46th Tōhoku Tsutsuji・Shakunage Training Meeting in Iwate and the 23rd Chūbu District Tsutsuji・Shakunage Training Meeting in Toyama. Overseas inspection tours are a distinctive activity; the society has led members to specialist rhododendron gardens in the United Kingdom such as Glendoick Garden and Exbury Garden, and has participated in the 75th anniversary convention of the American Rhododendron Society (ARS), the joint ARS–DRG international meeting and the 75th anniversary convention of the New Zealand Rhododendron Society.

International Exchange and Cultivar Registration

The society maintains long-standing relationships with sister organizations in the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany and New Zealand. It has acted as the Japanese point of contact for the ARS 75th Anniversary Convention with garden and nursery inspection, the joint ARS / Deutsche Rhododendron-Gesellschaft international meeting and the New Zealand Rhododendron Society 75th Anniversary Convention. The society also handles cultivar name registration (meishō tōroku) for Tsutsuji and Shakunage, allowing members to register names for new cultivars in the society bulletin and public records, and serving as an important node for cultivar information flow at the enthusiast scale.

Main Services and Public Resources

The society publishes, for members and the general public, a list of headquarters officers and organizational structure, prefectural branch contacts, training-meeting and convention announcements and reports, branch event notices, the cultivar name registration procedure, bulletin tables of contents, membership application information, and a link list of related Shakunage websites. The homepage long-standing note “members accepted at any time” welcomes new azalea and rhododendron enthusiasts, while the society explicitly prohibits unauthorized reproduction of texts and images. The official domain is rhododendron-soc.jp, which is used for bulletin editorial work, branch contact information and training-meeting registration.
