Black Jungle Exotics, originally known as Black Jungle Terrarium Supply, is a family-run mail-order specialty nursery founded in 1994 by Richard Revis and Michael Wallitis in Turners Falls, Franklin County, western Massachusetts. It specializes in carnivorous plants, vivarium tropicals, captive-bred poison dart frogs, and natural decor for naturalistic terrarium and vivarium habitats, and is one of the earliest New England advocates of the “naturalistic vivarium” concept promoted today by dart frog and herpetology hobbyists across the United States.
Brand Origins and Founders
Frustrated by the sterile astro-turf and artificial plants that dominated the U.S. reptile and amphibian hobby in the mid-1990s, Revis and Wallitis began experimenting with live tropicals in actual enclosures, sourcing material from botanical gardens, conservatories, and importers while learning from European vivarium shows. Their first ad ran in the inaugural issue of Reptiles Magazine. In early 2015, Revis stepped away to pursue other interests and Wallitis took over sole ownership; the Turners Falls retail showroom and public greenhouse closed by the end of May 2015, after which Black Jungle transitioned to a pure mail-order and show-circuit operation. Wallitis retained the three core lines: dart frog captive breeding, tropical plant sales, and Rainforest Adventure Tours to Central and South America.
Plant and Carnivorous Catalog
Black Jungle carries 19 major plant groupings for terrarium, vivarium, and houseplant use: aroids, gesneriads, begonias, peperomias, air plants and epiphytes, jewel orchids, bromeliads, ferns, Selaginella, aquatics and marginals, Huperzia, ant plants, cacti and succulents, house plants, “Fun and Easy” starter plants, themed Collections, rare and unusual plants, sunroom and greenhouse plants, and an orchid line. The dedicated carnivorous plant category covers seven genera: Venus flytrap (Dionaea), North American and tropical pitcher plants (Sarracenia), sundews (Drosera), butterworts (Pinguicula), tropical pitcher plants (Nepenthes), trigger plants, and Cephalotus. Black Jungle is a sales partner of the New England Carnivorous Plant Society (NECPS). Plants ship in 2-3 inch pots under organic, chemical-pesticide-free, and animal-safe cultivation protocols.
Dart Frogs and Live Animals
The dart frog breeding program covers Dendrobates tinctorius, D. auratus, D. leucomelas, Phyllobates terribilis, P. bicolor, P. vittatus, Epipedobates anthonyi, Ranitomeya fantastica / vanzolinii / imitator / variabilis / sirensis / benedicta / uakarii / summersi, Adelphobates galactonotus, Cruziohyla craspedopus, and Agalychnis callidryas, with dozens of named morphs and three size grades (froglet, sub-adult, adult). All frog orders ship via UPS Next Day Air or USPS Express Mail with signature required and must be scheduled by phone; in adverse weather, shipments are held at a UPS Hub for customer pickup. The same shipping protocol covers live plants and the flightless fruit fly cultures that feed newly acquired froglets.
Distribution and Mail-Order Logistics
Operating as mail-order only, Black Jungle attends a yearly circuit of regional expos across New York, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Its professional client list includes more than 60 U.S. zoos (San Diego, National, Bronx, Brookfield, Smithsonian-associated, Smith College, and others), over 25 natural history museums, 25+ public aquariums, multiple botanical gardens, nature centers, and butterfly conservatories. The store ships live plants and animals to the lower 48 U.S. states only; and offers a Live Arrival Guarantee compensated by store credit or replacement rather than cash refund. All plants are grown without chemical pesticides or synthetic growth regulators, in line with the founders’ original naturalistic-keeping philosophy.
