The Nursery and Display Garden
Stolpens Trädgård is a garden centre located at Ölme Stolpen in Kristinehamn, Värmland, Sweden. It has been run jointly by landscape engineer Jonas Grund and his wife, landscape architect Lucja Then, since 2006. The nursery sells conifers, trees and shrubs, magnolias, rhododendrons, azaleas and heathers, roses, climbers, perennials, ornamental grasses and bamboos, fruit trees and berry bushes across ten broad categories, with part of the range raised on site. The display garden laid out around the sales area combines a formal parterre (klippträdgård), a herb garden (kryddträdgård), ponds (dammar) and a woodland section, with hundreds of plants set into the surrounding rock outcrops and supplemented every year with new plantings.
Own Production and Supply Lines
The “Egen produktion” section focuses on perennials, shrubs and trees that are uncommon in cultivation but of clear horticultural merit. Some of these taxa are difficult to source elsewhere in Sweden and are typically held only in small numbers, so availability is hard to keep steady and customers are often asked to reserve in advance. The rest of the range is sourced from Sweden, Denmark and Poland, with Poland in recent years becoming one of the largest plant-producing regions in Europe. Direct imports allow the nursery to keep prices firm without compromising quality, and the most cold-hardy cultivars of each genus are chosen whenever possible for sites with harsher exposure.
Garden Design Services
The design office serves private clients, municipalities, housing cooperatives (bostadsrättsföreningar) and firms, with planning, project supervision and on-site landscaping. Work starts with a site visit and is delivered in three tiers — a full garden plan, a plant list and a simple drawing — emphasising planting decisions that match the soil and microclimate on the ground, so that plants settle in once and reduce the need for replacement. The nursery connects design and retail directly: customers who take the plants from their plan receive a discount on the nursery stock, and the designer is also the day-to-day operator of the nursery, so the recommendations draw on years of hands-on cultivation.
Public Lectures and Training
Lecturer Jonas Grund trained as a landscape engineer at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) campus in Alnarp, Skåne, and has earlier experience in nurseries, garden centres, public parks, online advice at Gröna rum and the Gothenburg Botanical Garden (Göteborgs botaniska trädgård). The lecture programme is on a partial pause from 2026; previous talks cover the history of Stolpens Trädgård, woody plant selection, cold-hardy cultivars, magnolias in depth, planting beds (växtbäddar), step-by-step garden construction and the challenges facing established gardens. The talks combine slides and on-site plant reference with photographs from garden visits in Sweden, Poland, England, Italy, California and Oregon.
Location and Opening
The nursery stands at Ölme Stolpen in Kristinehamn, Värmland, and is open from 1 April to 15 October each year, Wednesday to Friday 10.00–18.00 and on weekends 11.00–15.00, with Mondays and Tuesdays closed and the rest of the year available by appointment. The site is ringed by rocky ground typical of southern Värmland, where coniferous and broadleaf woodland alternate above a landscape of lakes and red granite. The latitude and winter conditions set clear limits for plant selection, and the nursery’s plant choices reflect that practical constraint.
