Company Overview
Territorial Seed Company was founded in 1979 by Steve Solomon on a five-acre homestead in Lorane, Oregon, originally producing a black-and-white organic gardening catalog. Tom Johns and his wife Julie purchased the business in 1985 and in 1987 established London Spring Farms—a 75-acre farm in a small Cascade Mountain foothills valley fed by the Coast Fork River (the headwaters of the Willamette)—to grow seed, run trials, and produce plants on-site. In 2022, ownership officially passed to the second generation, Jake Johns and Farren Johns, continuing the family-run model that has shaped the company for over four decades.
Products and Services
Territorial Seed Company offers vegetable seeds, flower seeds, herb seeds, fruit and berry plants, grapevines, perennials, bulbs, and live transplants including onion starts, garlic, citrus, camas, corydalis, saffron crocus, walking onion, eremurus, erythronium, fritillaria, ginseng rootlets, and goldenseal. Signature varieties developed or stewarded on the farm include Sweet Lorane fava bean, Oregon Spring, Oregon Star and Legend tomatoes, Pizza Pepper, Umpqua broccoli, Aunt Molly’s ground cherry, and Sweet Meat and Sugar Hubbard winter squashes. A free Spring 2026 print catalog is mailed within the United States each year, with a flat $8.95 shipping fee via USPS, FedEx, or UPS, optional 3-day express, and rush 1-2 day service.
Research and Technology
Every Territorial variety is trialed and evaluated on the home farm before it is offered for sale, and the company sets germination standards higher than those prescribed by the Federal Seed Act, with every seed lot laboratory-tested. Territorial is a signatory to the Safe Seed Pledge, selling only untreated, non-GMO seed, and the farm holds both USDA organic certification through CCOF and Salmon-Safe certification. A research partnership with Oregon State University’s Dr. Jim Baggett, begun in 1985, produced the first home-garden production runs of Oregon Spring, Oregon Star, and Legend tomatoes as well as Pizza Pepper, anchoring Territorial’s reputation for cold-tolerant, short-season breeding.
Heritage and Community
Founded by one generation and now run by the next, Territorial Seed Company remains a family operation in which “if Territorial offers it, it will perform just about anywhere you want to grow a garden.” The farm’s 100% satisfaction guarantee lets customers choose between replacement and refund on any unsatisfactory seed or supply. Beyond sales, the company has spent decades tracking down and re-introducing heirloom varieties that had disappeared from commercial catalogs, working with old Oregon seed houses and the USDA Plant Genetic Resources Unit to keep open-pollinated and heritage crops in active circulation for home gardeners across North America.
