Plant Development Services, Inc. (PDSI) is an Alabama-based horticultural services company founded in 1996 by Greg Smith of the third-generation family-owned Flowerwood Nursery, Inc. Rather than operate its own production nursery, PDSI specialises in plant-brand management, breeder services, U.S. plant patent assistance and a national Licensed Grower Network, and currently stewards five major plant brands: Encore® Azalea, Southern Living® Plant Collection, Sunset® Plant Collection, Better Boxwood® and Butterfly Candy®.Plant Development Services, Inc. (PDSI) was founded in 1996 by Greg Smith, of the third-generation, family-owned Flowerwood Nursery, Inc., one of the largest wholesale nurseries in the south-eastern United States. Headquartered today in Loxley, Alabama, PDSI operates as a brand-management and grower-network services company rather than as a production nursery. Through its Licensed Grower Network and Associate Grower Programs, PDSI channels branded plant material grown by authorised partner nurseries into the retail and landscape channels across the United States, with staff dedicated to plant-brand positioning, public relations, content marketing, paid media and trade-show engagement. PDSI maintains active participation in major U.S. horticultural trade events, including Cultivate in Columbus, Ohio, the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show (MANTS) in Baltimore, the California Spring Trials in Carpinteria, California, and TPIE, and works with authorised growers on liner, container and tag/label specifications that ensure consistent in-store presentation.

PDSI manages five distinct plant brands serving different U.S. climate zones and consumer segments. Encore® Azalea, the company’s flagship, was bred by plant inventor Robert “Buddy” Lee and is positioned as the world’s best-selling reblooming azalea, with 35 varieties that flower in spring, summer and fall and thrive in high filtered shade or full sun; Encore® Autumn Kiss® received both the 2025 Cultivate’25 Retailers’ Choice Award and the National Garden Bureau People’s Choice Green Thumb Award. Southern Living® Plant Collection leverages the brand equity of Southern Living magazine, which reaches 24.8 million readers each month and commands a 93% product-trust rate among its audience. Sunset® Plant Collection draws on more than 125 years of Sunset brand credibility to deliver a western regional plant line emphasising low-water, easy-care landscape material. Better Boxwood®, launched in 2023 in partnership with Everde Growers, is the first scientifically bred blight-resistant boxwood collection for the U.S. and Canadian retail and landscape markets, with varieties Babylon Beauty™, Heritage™, Renaissance™ and Skylight™ developed over two decades by Belgian grower Herplant BVBA in cooperation with the Flemish Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research. Butterfly Candy® is a dwarf, sterile Buddleia line tailored to U.S. states where traditional tall butterfly bush is restricted, with varieties including Li’l Cerise™ (Buddleia davidii ‘BotEx 007’ PP36348) and Li’l Magenta™.

Service Pillars and Marketing

PDSI’s operations rest on three pillars: Plant Breeder Services, Grow With Us, and Advertising. Plant Breeder Services invites breeders worldwide to submit new plant varieties for evaluation, then supports patenting, branding and national roll-out through PDSI’s network of grower partners and media relationships, with placements in Southern Living®, Sunset®, Better Homes & Gardens®, Real Simple® and Martha Stewart Living®. Grow With Us recruits and supports the licensed and associate grower network, providing young plants (liners), merchandising and POP signage specifications, technical grower guides, an annual Grower Conference (held in November) and dedicated Grower Network Meetings at Cultivate, with consistent quality, supply and brand recognition at point of sale as core objectives. PDSI continues to debut new genetics at California Spring Trials, MANTS and Cultivate each year. The 2026 California Spring Trials line is being marketed around “moody meets metallic” colour tones; MANTS 2026 (December 2025, Loxley, AL) previewed a “Brighter 2026 Lineup” echoing Pantone’s Cloud Dancer; Cultivate 2025 (July 2025) introduced “breakthrough hues” varieties; and a community replanting effort at North Carolina’s Lake Lure Flowering Bridge followed the 2024 destruction of the historic landmark by Hurricane Helene.
