Room & Garden

A furniture shop in Kreuzberg, Berlin

Room & Garden is a Berlin furniture shop in Kreuzberg, carrying the motto furniture for indoors and outdoors. It sits in a characterful artists’ courtyard, and for more than twenty years the business has been the same thing: choosing furniture worth handling, putting it in the shop and letting people come and look at it properly.

What they sell divides into two. One is garden furniture: chairs, tables, benches, loungers and complete sets, in teak, rattan, stainless steel, aluminium and iron, sorted by style from classic through Mediterranean and modern to light summer pieces. The other is solid wood furniture, mainly tables, beds, shelving, sideboards and sofa beds. Parasols, beach baskets and grills round it off.

Four materials for the garden

Teak is the longest-established range. Teak is weather-resistant because the wood is naturally oily: it stands up to moisture, heat, snow and cold, resists fungi, termites and various chemicals, and holds its dimensions well, which is why it has always been used for shipbuilding. The teak here is expected to come from the heart of the tree, where the oil content is highest, with careful drying and joinery that is accurate to the millimetre; the timber comes from state-supervised plantations run to sustainable forestry rules.

Stainless steel is the clean-lined option, aluminium is light and durable, rattan is the comfortable one and iron is the heavier, more rustic end. Samples of all four are set out so the choice can be made against a real garden rather than a photograph.

The teak is their own range

The teak is the part that is the company’s own: made to their designs and specifications, from timber taken from the heart of the tree, joined to the millimetre, with the seat geometry worked out and the pieces able to combine freely. Tables, benches, loungers, armchairs and deckchairs are held in stock, and the sofas are made in Germany to individual order.

That is a different arrangement from the rest of the shop, where furniture is bought straight from the manufacturer with no middleman, which is what keeps the price-to-quality ratio defensible. Custom work is also offered: shelving systems, room dividers and tables can be planned to size, and hospitality and project customers can have one-off pieces made.

The brands they carry

The names on the floor all have some history behind them: Ethnicraft for modern solid wood, Vincent Sheppard for rattan, Fermob for coloured metal, Glatz, Weishäupl and May for parasols, and Gloster and Stern for garden furniture. Their stated criteria are character, craftsmanship and durability rather than treating a logo as a status symbol.

They also describe how they work: dealing straight with manufacturers to avoid unnecessary intermediaries; visiting partner factories and international trade fairs regularly to keep up with materials and production methods; and developing a good many of their own designs out of specific customer requests.

Visiting and delivery

The shop is in Kreuzberg, hidden inside an artists’ courtyard and reachable by public transport; if the spaces at the door are full, the surrounding streets and a garage nearby are the fallback. The showroom is arranged like a home rather than a shop floor, and it changes with the seasons: in summer it opens outward and shows garden furniture and long evenings outside, in winter it draws in and gets quieter and softer.

A dedicated consultation time can be booked. Furniture is delivered on a day you choose, with the packaging taken away again afterwards, and whole schemes can be put together for a roof terrace or garden. The team pairs a manager who trained as a wood technologist, an interiors specialist who studied art history, and someone who handles logistics; questions can be sent by email as well as asked by phone.
