School Overview

Bonsaischule Enger is a family-run bonsai nursery located in Enger, in the East Westphalia region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Founded in 1982 by Hermann Pieper and his wife Michaela, the nursery is now managed by the third generation of the Pieper family — Michaela, Tobias, and Nicole — as a civil-law partnership (GbR). The site covers roughly two hectares and includes a brick-and-mortar shop of about 5,000 m², offering European and Asian-imported bonsai trees, pots, tools and consumables, together with holiday care, winter storage and beginner-to-advanced bonsai courses for customers throughout Germany and Europe.

Origins and Background

The Pieper family has been growing woody plants for four generations. After working with fruit trees and ornamental nursery stock in earlier decades, Hermann and Michaela Pieper began experimenting with local seedlings as bonsai in the late 1970s. In 1982 they formally redirected the entire business to the cultivation and sale of bonsai, and that focus has remained ever since. The nursery took its first mail-order customers through a printed catalogue in 1995, opened its own online channel in 2000, and from 2001 onwards began regular buying trips to Japan, Korea, Indonesia and Spain to select and import bonsai directly — a sourcing model the school still follows today.

Teaching and Apprenticeship

Bonsaischule Enger has been a state-recognised training nursery (Ausbildungsbetrieb) for gardeners specialising in tree nursery work since 1984, and was one of the first nurseries in Germany to train bonsai professionals on a systematic basis. Its first apprentice, Heike Zylka, is still on the team today, leading courses and sales. The school runs regular theory-plus-practice courses for beginners and more experienced hobbyists, covering pinching, repotting, pruning, fertilising, pine care, winter dormancy preparation and other foundational and intermediate subjects. Students may bring their own trees to class, and the school offers winter storage and holiday care as follow-on services.

Plant Collection and Products

Together with trees in cultivation, the nursery currently stocks more than two hundred native and exotic species, including Japanese black pine, Scots pine, field maple, elm, hornbeam, oak, apple, crab apple, pyracantha, azalea, crape myrtle, wisteria, pomegranate, ginkgo, privet, boxwood, fig, Serissa, Fukien tea, snowrose, umbrella tree and weeping fig among common indoor and outdoor varieties. The accompanying pot range covers Yixing, Yokkaichi and Tokoname ceramics, hand-thrown pots, plastic rectangular pots, stainless-steel deep pots, trays and natural stone slabs. Tools and consumables include aluminium wire from China and Japan, Japanese copper wire, shears, pliers, root tools, Biogold fertilisers and TerraSai substrates.

Opening Hours and Services

The nursery serves both walk-in and trade customers with in-store shopping, phone and email advice, on-site care and UPS shipping across Europe. Customers can leave trees at the nursery for holiday, winter or long-term care, where the team handles watering, pruning, repotting and pest management. Beyond day-to-day operations, the school co-organised a major biennial bonsai exhibition with the Bad Salzuflen tourist board from 1985 to 1991 and continues to take part regularly in the Trophy international bonsai exhibition in Belgium, keeping close ties with the European bonsai community.
