Carolside Gardens

Overview

Carolside Gardens sits in the Scottish Borders, just north of Earlston, in a bend of the River Leader and within a former designed landscape that includes an 18th-century Georgian mansion. The garden has been open to the public in summer for over two decades and is best known for its collection of historic roses.

The estate is also a working household — its small gardener staff and the owner’s family look after daily visits, group tours, and the rose-and-marbled retail line. An Instagram account (@carolsidegardens) keeps followers posted through the flowering season.

History

A house has stood on the Carolside site since the 1500s, originally as a tower house; the present Georgian mansion dates from 1740 and is attributed to Sir Isaac Ware’s design for Chesterfield House, Mayfair. By 1834, the New Statistical Account of Scotland was already describing the spot as a “sweet and secure asylum from the toils and troubles of this world,” a description still quoted today.

The oval walled garden has been cultivated for over 200 years. From the late 1980s onward, the owners set about restoring the Edwardian rose beds and assembling what has since become the UK Plant Heritage National Collection of pre-1900 Gallica Roses, also listed in the Guide to the Rose Gardens of Europe by the French National Society of Horticulture.

Garden Layout and Features

A roughly 200-metre walk runs through a sequence of garden rooms: the oval walled garden, the Rose Garden, the Secret Garden, the Winter Garden, the Herb Garden, and the Hidden Garden. Each room is planted in its own colour scheme — yellow and white with fresh greens in the herb garden, silver and pale pink in the secret garden, white roses with violets in the hidden garden — with soft, billowing herbaceous planting throughout.

The herbaceous borders carry the main flowering calendar: irises in late May, peonies and lupins in June, then roses and phlox from early July. The rose collection covers Gallica, Moss, Alba, Damask, Centifolia, Bourbon, Floribunda and Tea types, anchored by the rare pre-1900 Gallica national collection.

Status and Operations

For 2026, the garden is open 1 May – 1 October, daily, 11:00–17:00. Admission is £8 for adults, free for children under 16, and free for Historic Houses members; BBC Gardeners’ World 2-for-1 cardholders also apply.

Private group tours with refreshments or a sandwich lunch can be booked by email. Dogs are welcome on a lead in the park area before the entrance hut (livestock graze there), but are not admitted into the garden itself. Day-to-day care is handled by a small on-site team, with the public-facing effort concentrated around the late-June / early-July rose peak.

Related

Carolside is the only garden currently holding the National Collection of pre-1900 Gallica Roses under the UK Plant Heritage scheme, and its collection has featured in titles such as Scotland for Gardeners and The Times. Within the wider Scottish Borders garden trail, it sits alongside country-house gardens such as Floors Castle and Manderston, and is a regular stop on Scottish garden tour circuits.
