Founded in 1829 in the Lyon region of France by the Guillot family, Rosiers Guillot (SCEA Roseraie Guillot®) is one of the world’s oldest continuously operating family rose-breeding businesses, now in its seventh generation. In 1867, family member Jean-Baptiste Guillot fils produced ‘La France’ through manual hybridisation — universally acknowledged as the first modern Hybrid Tea rose, the cornerstone of the entire modern rose classification. The house gained international recognition with its first hybrid varieties as early as 1849, and at the turn of the twenty-first century the sixth generation created the Generosa® line, combining the fragrance of old garden roses with the form and remontancy of modern Hybrid Teas. Recent flagship varieties include ‘Honneur et Agriculture’®, ‘Chantal Ladesou’®, ‘Léopoldine Hugo-Vacquerie’® and ‘L’Intemporelle Mailly Grand Cru’®, while heritage varieties such as ‘Catherine Guillot’, ‘Mme Ernest Calvat’ and ‘Mme Isaac Péreire’ are still preserved. The complete catalogue spans more than 300 varieties covering Gallica, Bourbon, Portland, Noisette, Tea, Hybrid Tea and Polyantha roses. The head office is located at Cappelle-en-Pévèle in the Nord department of northern France, the breeding centre is near Chartres, the production network covers the Lyonnais, Orléanais and Anjou regions, and warehouses operate in Hanches (Eure-et-Loir) and at Serres du Carembault in the Nord.
Commercial Breeding, Name-your-Own-Rose Service and Global Distribution
Guillot® serves both amateur gardeners through its standard catalogue and professional clients through the bespoke “Donner son nom à une rose” (name-your-own-rose) service: the house reserves bare-root plants from its newest breeding selections for a one- to two-year production cycle, and the client receives the certificate of authenticity, technical documentation and the chosen name for the cultivar. Since 2012, a young team of breeders has led the Generosa® hybridisation programme, completing several thousand crosses each year and evaluating seedlings over a seven-to-ten-year period for disease resistance, fragrance, form, remontancy and a dozen other criteria. All plants are 100% French-grown through a network of partner nurseries in multiple production regions, and orders are shipped via Colissimo to metropolitan France and several European countries. Bare-root orders are dispatched between November and the end of March; container plants are sent from April to June.
Cultivation Guidance, Variety Selection and After-sales Service
The company website provides detailed rose cultivation tutorials covering the October-to-March bare-root planting window, the April onwards container supply, pruning and training techniques, ecological disease and pest control, mulching and composting, plus variety recommendations for special uses such as container roses, climbers and edible roses for jams and crystallised petals. The online catalogue offers filters by colour (white, yellow, orange, pink, red, bicolour, purple, striped), habit (bush, climbing, rambling, landscape, container, standard), fragrance and flowering period, allowing customers to pinpoint varieties suited to their specific garden conditions. Every bare-root plant carries a Guillot® authenticity label and an invoice, and is covered by a growth guarantee until 31 May of the following year (up to 30% of the order). Container plants are supplied already in growth and are therefore excluded from this guarantee.
Industry Standing, International Reputation and the Annual Catalogue
Guillot® remains active in the world rose industry in the dual capacity of “obtenteur et producteur” (breeder and producer), and has been awarded the French “Trésor culturel vivant” (Living Cultural Heritage) designation. The house publishes its full Catalogue 2025-2026 in both printed and digital formats, listing detailed characteristics, prices and cultivation notes for all 300-plus varieties, and maintains long-term communication with customers worldwide from its head office in Cappelle-en-Pévèle and through the French postal network. For La Roseraie Guillot, every rose variety is a living memory of the family and a continuation of the French horticultural tradition.
