学会沿革与法人化进程
日本植物学会的历史可追溯到 1882 年。当年 2 月 25 日，原本与动物学者合组的东京大学生物学会（1878 年创立）内植物学者独立出来，成立了东京植物学会，并随即创办机关志《植物学杂志》（即现在的 Journal of Plant Research）。学会在 1907 年改用现名 The Botanical Society of Japan，在百年纪念时曾系统整理 100 年来的日本植物学史。2012 年学会迎来创立 130 周年，并向内阁府申请获认定为公益社团法人，同年决定采用统一的学会 logo，正式确立现在的公益社团法人日本植物学会（The Botanical Society of Japan, BSJ）的法人身份。
宗旨、组织架构与会员构成
学会章程把自身使命界定为「推进植物学相关研究的发展与知识普及，贡献学术进步」。运营由会长、专务理事、编辑担当理事、庶务担当理事、会计担当理事及若干理事组成理事会，下设运营委员会、JPR 编辑委员会、电子出版物编辑委员会、选举管理委员会、ダイバーシティ推进委员会、出版委员会、图书担当委员等多个内设机构。会员分正会员（一般／学生）和海外会员（一般／学生）四类。会员管理业务委托给一般社团法人学会支援机构，会费按年度缴纳，新会员需在 web 登记后再缴纳初年度会费。
机关志与系列出版物
现行英文学术月刊 Journal of Plant Research（JPR）由 Springer 出版（电子 ISSN 1618-0860、印刷 ISSN 0918-9440），由 BSJ 编辑委员会负责同行评审与编务，刊物被 Science Citation Index Expanded、SCOPUS、Medline、Biological Abstracts、CAB Abstracts、JST 等数据库收录。学会另以和文综述集《植物科学最前线（BSJ-Review）》（ISSN 2432-9819）整理每年大会シンポジウム的内容，发行至今已至第 17 卷（2026）。同时公开由国立科学博物馆金井弘夫先生寄赠的植物学术语集数据库。
年度大会、公开讲座与奖励体系
年度大会自 2010 年起每年召开，第 90 回大会（野田）计划于 2026 年 9 月 4—6 日在东京理科大学野田校区举行。大会采用口头发言、海报展示、获奖演讲及一般公开讲座的组合形式，近年多以面对面 + 线上混合方式举办。公开讲座方面，自 2018 年起每年举办《植物科学が拓く新しい世界》系列活动面向一般市民。学会另设日本植物学会赏（大赏 / 学术赏 / 鼓励赏 / 若手鼓励赏 / JPR 论文赏 / 特别赏）共 6 个奖项，每年接受自荐或推荐，并在年度大会上为获奖者颁发奖状与副奖。
分支部、国际协同与公开资源
学会在北海道、东北、北陆、中部、近畿、中国・四国、九州・冲绳设有 7 个地区植物学会作为关联团体，并在 PSP（Plant Science Portal）站点上与日本植物生理学会、日本植物生物技术学会联合发布新闻、Q&A 与研究专访。国际方面，BSJ 长期与亚洲区域植物学会合作，并参与国际植物分类学会等机构的工作。为提醒公众注意伪信息，学会在该会主页上公告：BSJ 不会以「免费赠送苗木」等名义征集个人信息或要求转账。
Founding and Public-interest Incorporation
The society traces its origin to 1882, when the botanists separated from the Tokyo University Biological Society (founded 1878) and established the Tokyo Botanical Society on February 25. The same year they launched the journal The Botanical Magazine (now Journal of Plant Research). In 1907 the society adopted its current English name The Botanical Society of Japan. Around the 1982 centennial the society published a comprehensive history of Japanese botany, and in 2012 it marked its 130th anniversary, was approved as a Public-interest Incorporated Association by the Cabinet Office, and adopted the unified BSJ logo still in use today.
Mission, Governance and Membership
The society’s stated mission is to promote research in plant science and disseminate botanical knowledge, thereby contributing to academic development. It is led by an elected President, an Executive Director, an Editorial Director, an Accounting Director and a General Affairs Director, with a board that oversees standing committees on operations, JPR editing, electronic publishing, elections, diversity, awards and library affairs. Membership is open to individuals who share the society’s aims and is divided into four categories: Regular (general / student) for residents of Japan and Overseas (general / student) for those living abroad. Membership administration is delegated to a third-party academic society service provider.
Journals and Other Publications
The society’s main English-language journal is the monthly Journal of Plant Research (JPR), published by Springer under electronic ISSN 1618-0860 and print ISSN 0918-9440. The journal is indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded, SCOPUS, Medline, Biological Abstracts, CAB Abstracts, JST and many other databases. The society also publishes the Japanese-language review series Frontiers of Plant Science (BSJ-Review, ISSN 2432-9819), which collects reviews derived from each annual meeting’s symposium and reached volume 17 in 2026. A public plant-science glossary, originally compiled by Dr. Hiroo Kanai of the National Museum of Nature and Science, is also hosted on the society’s website.
Annual Meeting, Public Lectures and Awards
BSJ has held an annual meeting every year since 2010. The 90th Meeting (Noda) is scheduled for September 4–6, 2026 at Tokyo University of Science’s Noda campus, and recent meetings have combined on-site oral and poster sessions with online streaming. Since 2018 the society has also run an annual public lecture series titled “We Love Plants — New Frontiers of Plant Science” that brings current botanical research to a general audience. Awards administered by the society include the Grand Prize, the Academic Prize, the Encouragement Prize, the Young Researcher Encouragement Prize, the JPR Paper Prize and the Special Prize (covering technology, education and other contributions).
Branches, Outreach and Joint Portal
Seven regional botanical societies—Hokkaido, Tohoku, Hokuriku, Chubu, Kinki, Chugoku-Shikoku and Kyushu-Okinawa—serve as affiliated bodies. Together with the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists and the Japanese Society for Plant Biotechnology, BSJ co-publishes the joint portal Plant Science Portal (PSP), which collects news, Q&A and research features for both specialists and the general public. The society also alerts visitors that BSJ never solicits personal information or financial transfers in the name of free seedlings or similar campaigns.
