Society History and Governance
Founded in 1929, the Cactus and Succulent Society of America, Inc. (CSSA) is an international non-profit dedicated to the study, cultivation, preservation, and propagation of cacti and succulents. The Society is based in the greater Pasadena, California area and continues to migrate its publication archives, presidential biographies, and historical records onto its new online home. A searchable list of all CSSA Presidents from 1929 to present is maintained in the Society Archives alongside awards, important succulentists, and event retrospectives.
Membership and Events
Standard Membership is offered at tiered rates for US, Canada, and International members and includes the print Cactus and Succulent Journal, while Supporter Membership is offered at a reduced rate with the digital To the Point newsletter. A Standard Member may purchase a Associate Membership at a modest fee for a same-household individual, granting voting rights and biennial convention eligibility. The 59th Annual Show & Sale is held each June at The Huntington in San Marino, California, with juried plant competitions, a Saturday dinner and silent auction, and the Saturday night auction moving online via Palmstreet for 2026. CSSA also hosts a Biennial National Convention, with the 2027 Convention currently in planning. Members receive a complimentary timed-entry ticket to The Huntington during the Show & Sale. Webinars and Zoom lectures run year-round.
Journal and Academic Publications
CSSA publishes three core periodicals. The Cactus and Succulent Journal, established in 1929, appears quarterly and is now managed by a managing editor who holds a Ph.D. from Arizona State University focused on cactus conservation, evolution, and biogeography. Haseltonia is the peer-reviewed yearbook of scientific research, with 100–150 pages per issue covering taxonomy, new species, chemical studies, cytology, and conservation; Haseltonia 31 was released in November 2024. To The Point, edited by a dedicated editor, is the quarterly digital newsletter for Standard and Supporter members, delivered via the member portal as a PDF. layout and design are handled by a dedicated team for both Journal and Haseltonia. A searchable PDF index covering Volumes 1–97 of the Cactus and Succulent Journal is now freely available.
Research and Conservation Programs
Since 2008 the CSSA Research Committee has awarded over a hundred and sixty thousand dollars in small grants (each up to several thousand dollars) to academic researchers worldwide. Funded projects span new species discovery, ecological associations, taxonomy and nomenclature, cultivation and propagation, threatened species conservation, and basic morphology and physiology. The Conservation Committee, co-chaired, drafted a refreshed conservation policy statement in fall 2023 that addresses habitat-collected plants in trade. In partnership with ethicalcactus.com the Society produced a poster teaching growers how to recognize endangered taxa and avoid poached material. In March 2026, The Economist (1843 magazine) published a feature on the global rise of cactus and succulent poaching, which CSSA amplified to its membership with a call to identify warning signs and decline suspect offers.
Affiliates and Public Education
The Affiliate Club Program began in the 1930s to connect hobbyists, growers, and scientists with local cactus and succulent societies. Affiliate Society Membership is offered at a modest annual rate and includes two print copies of each quarterly Journal plus To the Point. The Affiliates Committee, co-chaired, supports local clubs through the Plant-of-the-Month program, a National Speakers List, a Youth Education Grant Initiative, and audiovisual assistance for meetings. The Society Archive migrates historic records onto the new site, including awards, important succulentists, governance documents, conventions archive, and biographical material on past leaders. All CSSA shows and sales prohibit the exhibition or sale of field-collected plants, in keeping with the conservation policy. Webinars such as Saguaros Under Pressure, Strange Mesembs, Haworthia Propagation, First Time in Mexico and Blooming Ariocarpus, Stepelianthus of Madagascar, Discover Yemen, and Rare Plant Monitoring with Scent Detection Dogs extend the Society education mission to a global audience.
