Historical Evolution

The Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists (JSPP) was founded on 4 April 1959 in Tokyo at the Hakushi Kaikan, with an inaugural general assembly attended by 46 of the 208 founding members; Joji Ashida of the Institute of Applied Microbiology, University of Tokyo, became the first president, and the society launched two journals simultaneously — the Japanese-language Bulletin and the English-language Plant and Cell Physiology (PCP). Conceived as a counterpart to the International Association for Plant Physiology, the society brought together researchers in agriculture, pharmacology and basic biology who worked on plant physiology. In 2014 it incorporated as a general incorporated association (ippan shadan hōjin, non-profit type) under the Japanese General Incorporated Associations Act, and from 2014 PCP has been published in cooperation with Oxford University Press under a profit-share agreement. The annual meeting has toured Japan since 1966, and the 2009 Nagoya congress marked the 50th anniversary with a commemorative international symposium titled Perspectives of Plant Science in the 21st Century.

Organizational Structure

The society is governed by a board of 19 directors and 2 auditors; for the 2026 term Hitoshi Sakakibara of Nagoya University serves as president, Atsuko Kyozuka of Tohoku University as vice-president, Naoyuki Uchida as executive secretary and Tetsuya Higashiyama of the University of Tokyo as editor-in-chief. Standing committees cover editing, gender equality, international affairs, election management, public outreach, plant science new technologies and the MIRAI 2030 initiative; 107 delegates elected for the 2026–2027 term represent the society across nine regional constituencies covering Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Tokyo, Hokuriku, Chubu-Tokai, Kinki, Chugoku-Shikoku and Kyushu, drawing members from 71 research institutions. Total membership reached 6,003 in 2022 (11 honorary, 51 life, 1,410 regular and 427 student members in Japan plus 50 overseas regular and 2 overseas life members), supported by 19 corporate sustaining members including Oji Paper, Kagome, Sakata Seed, Shiseido, Shimadzu, Kirin HD, Sumitomo Chemical, Nissan Chemical, JT and Hamamatsu Photonics.

Annual Meetings and Scientific Activities

The society hosts an annual spring congress that has rotated across Japan for more than 60 years; recent editions include the 67th meeting in Kobe (13–15 March 2026), the 66th in 2025 and the 65th in 2024, all delivered as hybrid on-site/online events with general oral sessions, symposia, award lectures and a high-school student poster session that regularly attract more than 1,000 participants. The 68th congress will be held 6–8 March 2027 at the Ryukoku University Fukakusa campus in Kyoto under the chairmanship of Yuji Nakano of Kyoto University, with English as the default presentation language. Beyond its domestic meetings the society co-hosts international symposia including the first IAPP conference in Germany (1975), Taiwan-Japan Plant Biology 2017 in Taipei, Taiwan-Japan Plant Biology 2023, and the joint Plant Biology 2003/2009 congresses with the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB); reciprocal membership agreements have been signed with ASPB and the Taiwan Society of Plant Biologists (TSPB).

Journals, Publications and Awards

Plant and Cell Physiology, the society’s flagship English-language journal, has been published continuously since 1959 and is now produced in partnership with Oxford University Press under a profit-share framework that runs through 2033, with overseas submissions accounting for more than half of all papers and an impact factor that places it among the most cited Asian journals in plant science. Complementary publications include the Japanese-language Bulletin, the JSPP Newsletter, the five-volume Plant Marukajiri Sosho supervised by the society (2007–2008), the Kodansha Bluebacks series “Natto-ku! The Mystery of Plants”, “Natto-ku! The Mystery of Plants Part 2” and “The Science of New Plant Hormones”, and an annual high-school biology textbook. Awards presented each year at the annual meeting include the JSPP Award (since 2004), the Distinguished Service Award (since 2005), the Encouragement Award and Paper Award (since 1994), the Special Award (since 2001), the Young Investigator Award and the PCP Paper Award.

International Collaboration and Social Outreach

JSPP is a founding member of the Global Plant Council, has endorsed the joint PCP statement alongside leading international plant-biology journals, and operates the public Q&A platform Minna no Hiroba. Together with the Botanical Society of Japan it has served as a trustee society of the Inter-Society Liaison Committee for Promoting Equality of Male and Female Scientists (2014–2015), publishes public information materials on genetically modified crops, and submits policy recommendations on plant-science funding to the Cabinet Office, MEXT and other ministries. Through the MIRAI 2030 initiative the society expands international support for early-career researchers with overseas travel grants, English-publication incentives and a new senior membership track; closer ties with the American Society of Plant Biologists and the Taiwan Society of Plant Biologists are being deepened through reciprocal membership benefits and a shared commitment to building an integrated Asian plant-science research community.
