About the site
welt-der-rosen.de is one of the longest-running German-language rose reference sites on the open web. It has been compiled and maintained by Maria Mail-Brandt since the year 2000. The four-word tagline — Rosenwelt, Rosenzauber, Rosenlust, Rosenfaszination — frames the project as a portal that gathers almost everything there is to know about historic and modern varieties, breeding, literature and culture of the rose.
Content sections
The site is organised into eleven fixed sections: rose varieties (Rosensorten), rose breeding (Rosenzüchtung), rose literature (Rosenliteratur), rose addresses (Rosenadressen), rose personalities (Rosenmenschen), rose names (Rosennamen), rose stories (Geschichte(n)), rose uses (Rosenverwendung), rose calendar (Rosenkalender), web link tips (Rosenlinks) and a Sitemap. The varieties index is split into 26 alphabet pages (A to Z) and is by far the largest part of the site.
Scale of material
In the homepage prose and on the imprint, the author states the size of the collection: roughly 8,000 rose-variety entries, paired with around 5,000 rose photographs. Sources are described as the author’s long-standing personal library of rose and gardening books, magazine articles, talks, personal contacts and internet research; the imprint carries the standard disclaimer «All Angaben ohne Gewähr» (all information without guarantee).
Addresses and personalities
The addresses section (Rosenadressen) groups nurseries, public rose gardens, rose cities and rose festivals across Germany by the first digit of the postal code (0–9), and extends into Belgium, Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Australia and the United States. The personalities section features historical figures connected to the rose; the names section traces the origin of more than 3,000 cultivar names.
Authorship and reuse
The page footer credits «Text und Design 2000–2026: Maria Mail-Brandt». The text is largely original prose based on long personal research, and the photographs are mostly taken by the author or named collaborators. The copyright notice allows private use of the images but requires written permission for any commercial reuse. The same author maintains several sister sites covering broader horticultural topics — GartenLiteratur, Zauberpflanzen, Veilchenhomepage, Schneeglöckchenhomepage and Gartenlinksammlung.
