About ICL Group and the Specialty Fertilizers Business
ICL Specialty Fertilizers (ICL-SF) is the specialty plant nutrition unit of ICL Group Ltd. (formerly Israel Chemicals Ltd., renamed in 2014), a Tel Aviv-headquartered chemicals group whose raw-material base is built on the potash, phosphate and bromine resources of the Dead Sea and the Negev Desert. ICL Group itself was formed in 1968 by the State of Israel to consolidate several state-owned mineral and chemical enterprises; it has been listed on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange since 1991 and on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker “ICL” since 2014, with Israel Corporation Ltd. remaining its largest shareholder at about 43.98%. ICL Specialty Fertilizers was effectively built around the 2011 acquisition of Scotts Miracle-Gro’s Global Professional business for around 270 million US dollars, which was integrated under the “Everris” brand and folded into ICL in 2015; its main research and production base sits in the Netherlands, with additional offices in the United Kingdom, Spain, China, the United States and elsewhere.
Core Product Lines and Brands
ICL Specialty Fertilizers runs a layered brand portfolio across ornamental horticulture, turf and amenity, and specialty agriculture. In ornamental horticulture, Osmocote controlled-release fertilizer goes back to 1967-1968, when the Sierra Chemical Company introduced the world’s first resin-coated NPK granule; it is now in its fifth generation and is paired with Peters water-soluble fertilizers (with the M-77 nutrient-uptake package) and Universol (featuring the Bright Solution System pH-regulation technology) for pot plants, container nursery stock, cut flowers and high-demand crops. In turf and amenity, the company offers Sierraform GT, ProTurf, Sportsmaster WSF and ProSelect grass seeds; in specialty agriculture it markets Agroleaf Power foliar feeds, Agroblen controlled-release fertilizers, Agrolution Special and Nova water-soluble products, plus Pura granular products based on Polysulphate polyhalite that is mined at ICL’s Boulby Mine in North Yorkshire, UK. Osmocote and Peters remain two of the most frequently cited benchmark products in the global container-nursery industry.
R&D and Production Network
Research and development for ICL Specialty Fertilizers is concentrated at the central laboratory in Heerlen, the Netherlands, working with the group’s R&D centre in Newe Yamin, Israel, the Polysulphate extraction operation at the Boulby Mine in North Yorkshire, and the North American headquarters in Creve Coeur, Missouri. The wider ICL Group runs plants and mines in Israel, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, China and South America, and reported 125 offices and plants worldwide in 2022, with around 13,233 employees in 2021; close to half of group sales come from products manufactured outside Israel. ICL Specialty Fertilizers itself was sized at roughly 700 million US dollars when it was formed, and the integration of Everris / Scotts Professional gave it a full-chain platform spanning raw materials, formulation and global distribution.
Application Areas and Industry Standing
ICL Specialty Fertilizers serves three main application areas. The first is ornamental horticulture and nursery production, where controlled-release plus water-soluble combinations are used for pot plants, plug plants, greenhouse cut flowers and perennials. The second is turf and amenity, covering golf courses, sports fields, municipal green spaces and home lawns, with controlled-release fertilizers, wetting agents and biostimulants such as Vitalnova and H2Pro. The third is broad-acre and specialty crops, including potato, tomato, wheat, oilseed rape, coffee, olive and many other crops under drip, sprinkler and foliar feeding regimes. At group level, ICL had revenue in 2021 of US$6.955 billion with net income of US$832 million; the specialty-fertilizers segment is part of an export-oriented group whose roughly 90% of sales are exports, that is the world’s sixth-largest potash producer, and that grew group revenue to about US$10.2 billion in 2022.
Official Sites and Where to Source the Products
Official entry points for ICL Specialty Fertilizers are the group corporate site icl-group.com, the icl-growingsolutions.com product portal (which carries product manuals, safety data sheets, field trial data and crop guides), and the icl-sf.com sub-site focused on water-soluble fertilizers and fertigation (where “ICL-SF” is the industry short form used by distributors). For sourcing, the Osmocote, Peters, Universol, Sierraform and ProTurf lines are typically distributed through garden centers and nursery supply dealers, while the Agroleaf, Agroblen and Pura Polysulphate lines are routed through agricultural input distributors and large-scale farm cooperatives. Local distributor lists, technical sheets and current pricing are all available through the three official sites above.
