历史沿革

新英格兰植物园(New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill)位于马萨诸塞州博伊尔斯顿,隶属于沃斯特郡园艺学会(Worcester County Horticultural Society)。该学会创立于1842年,是美国历史最悠久的园艺机构之一。植物园于1986年正式向公众开放,占地近200英亩,经过近四十年的发展,已成为新英格兰地区最具代表性的综合性植物园。2022年正式更名为现名,以反映其日益扩大的区域影响力。

公众活动

History

New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill is located in Boylston, Massachusetts, and is operated by the Worcester County Horticultural Society, one of the oldest horticultural institutions in the United States, founded in 1842. The Garden opened to the public in 1986 on nearly 200 acres of land and has grown to become the most comprehensive botanic garden in New England. In 2022, the Garden rebranded to reflect its expanded regional reach and mission.

Institutional Character

New England Botanic Garden is a nonprofit organization accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), holding 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status (EIN: 04-1988945). The Garden is open year-round and features conservatories, formal and naturalistic gardens, a Garden Shop, a cafe, walking trails, and expansive views of the Wachusett Reservoir. Sustainability and environmental stewardship are central to the Garden’s operations.

Garden Spaces

The Garden encompasses diverse themed spaces including the Apple Orchard, The Ramble, Climate Garden, Cottage Garden, Garden of Inspiration, Orangerie, Secret Garden, Vegetable Garden, Wildlife Refuge Pond, Winter Garden, Pliny’s Allée, and Field of Daffodils. The Garden library holds more than 6,000 botanical books and journals, some dating back centuries.

Scientific Research

The Garden maintains a significant living collection of rare and endangered plant species and is committed to ex-situ plant conservation. In 2023, the Garden transferred its rare botanical book collection to the University of New Hampshire’s Milne Special Collections and Archives, including John Coulson’s 234 plant species records from 1888 and Asa Gray’s 1868 Manual of Botany.

Public Programs

The Garden offers a robust year-round calendar of educational programs, exhibitions, and special events including Night Lights (voted #1 Best Botanical Garden Holiday Lights in the USA TODAY 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards 2025), the Botanical Tattoo Exhibit, Glass in Flight sculpture exhibition, and the Garden Dining Series.
