协会概况

历史沿革

协会起源于二十世纪初的北美城市美化运动。当时商业领袖成立协会，旨在鼓励市民在这片原本少树的草原地带学习园艺、改良城市环境。1914 年，在首任卡尔加里公园部门负责人 William Reader 的协调下，协会推动种植了一万余株树木，与市政当年补植的另万余株一同奠定了城市绿化基础。1980 年代初期，协会会员曾跌至历史最低的 27 人，濒临解散。志愿者 David Matthews 与 Sheila Paulson 接手后三年内将会员拉升至一千五百余人，重组董事会并重启募捐。1989 年协会协助市民投票选出卡尔加里市花——红色欧白英（Pulsatilla vulgaris rubra）。2018 年协会迎来一百一十周年庆典；2025 年协会庆祝一百一十七周年，长期会员规模稳步维持在四千余人。

核心项目与教育

协会的三大支柱为社区与联结、教育与学习、资源与推广，年度运营以园艺教育为核心，面向卡尔加里独特的小气候挑战提供全龄段课程。全年开设七个方向的学习活动——线下实操、Zoom 在线、点播回放、手作工坊、问答互动、混合课程与现场导览；围绕六个园艺主题（规划、植物、动物、土壤、创意与收获）设计专项课程。旗舰活动包括春末的园丁市集（Gardeners’ Market）、春季植物分享会（Plant Share）、秋季植物分享会与秋播大蒜交换、入门讲座与大师讲座系列、DNA Gardens 园艺旅行巴士团、面向公众的开放私家花园之旅（Open Gardens）以及与卡尔加里市合作开展的 Design Your Yard 庭院设计工作坊。每月举办问答专场，请园艺专家回答会员室内外种植难题。

会员与社区花园

个人会员年费 55 加元，长者年费 35 加元，学生另有专项，会员资格包含十二个月学习活动、十一场问答项目、十项以上合作商家专属折扣、九个月室内课堂、一年八期《Calgary Gardening》会刊、五场开放花园导览、四个月实操园事活动以及三类种子与植物分享途径：线下 Plant Share、Facebook 专组与会员论坛分享版块。会员还可参加两个标志性年度聚会，并向好友推荐赠予会籍。社区花园项目由协会与卡尔加里市公园部门联合资助，2008 年时仅十一个筹备团体，到 2025 年已发展为两百余个遍布公私用地的社区园圃，协会为新园提供启动咨询，为老园提供持续支持，并将其纳入每周电邮简报《Gardener’s Corner》专题报道。

About the Society

The Calgary Horticultural Society (CHS) is a registered charity founded in 1908 and headquartered in the Sunrise Room of the Silver Springs Community Association in the Sunrise Room of the Silver Springs Community Association in northwest Calgary. With more than 3,500 members, it ranks among the largest and most active gardening volunteer organizations in Western Canada. The Society partners with the City of Calgary Parks Division, the Government of Alberta, the Calgary Foundation, Greengate Garden Centres, Nutrien, Cargill and more than three hundred local businesses, nonprofits and community gardens to deliver year-round horticultural support across the Calgary region.

Historical Evolution

The Society traces its origins to the early-twentieth-century City Beautiful movement, when local business leaders formed the organization to help citizens learn gardening in the largely treeless prairie environment. In 1914, working with William Reader, the City’s first Parks Superintendent, the Society helped plant more than 10,000 trees alongside another 10,000 seedlings planted by the City. Membership fell to an all-time low of 27 in the early 1980s, threatening closure, until volunteers David Matthews and Sheila Paulson rebuilt the board and lifted enrollment past 1,500 within three years. The Society helped Calgarians choose the red pasque flower (Pulsatilla vulgaris rubra) as the city flower in 1989. The Society marked its 110th anniversary in 2018 and its 117th in 2025.

Programs and Education

Three pillars—community connections, education and resources—guide the Society’s work. Annual programming addresses the challenges of Calgary’s foothills-and-prairie microclimate through hands-on workshops, Zoom sessions, video on demand, make-and-take classes, Q&A forums, hybrid instructor-led courses and garden tours. Six topical umbrellas—planning, flora, fauna, soil, creative and harvest—structure the curriculum. Signature events include the spring Gardeners’ Market, the spring and fall Plant Shares, the garlic exchange, DNA Gardens horticulture wagon tours, Open Gardens, monthly Member Talks and the Design Your Yard workshop series co-hosted with the City of Calgary.

Membership and Community Gardens

Individual memberships are 55 CAD per year; seniors 65+ pay 35 CAD and students qualify for a dedicated rate. Benefits include twelve months of learning and events, eleven Q&A programs, more than ten partner discounts, nine months of indoor learning, eight issues of the Calgary Gardening magazine annually, five Open Gardens tour dates, four months of in-the-garden activities and three plant-sharing channels—in-person Plant Shares, the Facebook Plant Share group and the Members’ Forum. The Community Gardens program, jointly funded by the City of Calgary Parks Division, grew from fewer than eleven founding groups in 2008 to more than 200 community gardens on public and private land by 2025, all supported through the Society’s weekly Gardener’s Corner e-news.
