兰苏园历史沿革与苏州姐妹城市渊源
兰苏园的命名取自波特兰（Portland）与苏州（Suzhou）两地地名的音韵融合：「兰」（蘭）为兰花之意，「苏」（蘇）含苏醒、觉醒之义，「园」（園）即花园，整体可诗意地解读为「兰花觉醒之园」（Garden of Awakening Orchids）。花园规划与建造由来自苏州的 60 余名中国工匠赴波特兰完成，沿袭明代江南士族园林「虽由人作，宛自天开」的造园传统，园内 80 余座建筑、亭台、廊桥、漏窗与叠石均按江南古典法式营造，并以太湖石、黄石等本地与运抵材料组合构筑山池水系。园方将自身定位为「超越花园本身」（#MoreThanAGarden），每年向公众提供超过 500 项文化与园艺类活动。
园区布局、专类植物收藏与古琴湖锦鲤
园区主体由围绕古琴湖（Lake Zither）的水景与多进庭院组成，划分为都会林（City Forest）、月到波心（Moon on Water）、盘古开天（Pangu Opening the Sky）、壶中天地（Universe in a Pot）、石上瀑布（Waterfall on Rock）、清泉石径（Spring Stone Path）、涌泉（Springs）、林荫大道（Avenue of Trees）等八大景区。园内植物收藏以原产于中国的物种为骨干，拥有 50 余株大型标本树、数十种稀有与不寻常的灌木与多年生植物，重点专类包括玉兰、牡丹、山茶、杜鹃、桂花、梅花、竹类与盆景（penjing），并栽培有莲花数十种。湖中放养 30 余尾锦鲤与大量金鱼，象征吉祥与悠久的东亚园林传统。古琴湖的莲园是太平洋西北地区唯一集中展示中国莲品种群的水景。
文化项目、节庆活动与艺术展览

Organisation Overview and Cultural Mission
Lan Su Chinese Garden sits at 239 NW Everett Street in Portland’s historic Old Town Chinatown, Oregon. The garden is a Ming-dynasty style scholar garden built through the Portland-Suzhou sister-city relationship and opened to the public on September 14, 2000. Lan Su Chinese Garden is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization registered under the U.S. Internal Revenue Code with Federal Tax ID 93-1296840. The garden pursues a mission of Inspire, Engage, and Educate to cultivate an oasis of tranquil beauty and harmony in appreciation of richly authentic Chinese culture, and a vision of Value, Celebrate, and Grow that welcomes communities of all backgrounds.
Historical Development and the Suzhou Sister-City Bond
The garden’s name fuses sounds drawn from Portland and Suzhou, its Chinese sister city. Lan means orchid, Su means to arise or awaken, and yuan means garden, so the name can be read poetically as Garden of Awakening Orchids. The garden was designed and constructed by more than sixty artisans dispatched from Suzhou, who applied the traditional Jiangnan scholar-garden aesthetic of “made by humans, born of nature.” Over 80 pavilions, halls, covered walkways, latticed windows and rockeries follow Ming-era Suzhou conventions, with locally sourced and imported Lake Tai and yellow stones composing the hills and water features. The garden positions itself as #MoreThanAGarden and delivers more than 500 cultural and botanical programs each year.
Garden Layout, Plant Collections, and Lake Zither Koi
The garden is organized around Lake Zither and a series of courtyard enclosures. Eight named zones, City Forest, Moon on Water, Pangu Opening the Sky, Universe in a Pot, Waterfall on Rock, Spring Stone Path, Springs, and Avenue of Trees, frame the central water basin. The plant collection emphasizes species native to China and includes more than fifty specimen trees, a deep holding of rare and unusual shrubs and perennials, and curated collections of magnolia, peony, camellia, rhododendron, osmanthus, plum, bamboo, and penjing (the Chinese art of miniature landscape). Lake Zither is home to more than thirty koi and numerous goldfish, and its lotus basin is the only dedicated Chinese-lotus display in the Pacific Northwest.
Cultural Programs, Festivals, and Art Exhibitions
Lan Su runs cultural, horticultural, and artistic programs year-round. Signature seasonal festivals include Lian: The Lotus Festival (July 3 to August 22, 2026), Mid-Autumn lantern celebrations, Lunar New Year lantern viewing evenings, and Lion Dance & Kung Fu Weekends; regular programming features tai chi, Chinese conversation tables, and live traditional music. The in-house Yun Shui Teahouse serves traditional Chinese tea daily and partners with the Oregon Botanical Artists to host the Steep & Paint workshop series each Friday afternoon through January 2027. The garden also curates a year-round schedule of exhibitions by local AANHPI artists in the Scholar’s Study and Reflections in Clear Ripples galleries, with all displayed artwork available for purchase. Horticultural learning includes the weekly #PlantWednesday spotlight tour, plant-focused lectures, and structured K-12 school visits as well as college group tours.
Membership, Volunteer Network, and Community Education Partners
Membership tiers include Basic at $75 per year (member plus one guest), Family & Friends at $120 per year (two cardholders, each with two adult and two minor guests), Senior/Student at $45 per year, and the access-oriented Moon Gate membership at $20 per year for Oregon and Southwest Washington households receiving public income assistance. All paid memberships include the Reciprocal Admission Program, which in 2026 expands to 29 partner cultural attractions across Oregon. The garden partners with Portland-area K-12 districts, private schools, and higher-education institutions to deliver Chinese cultural and garden-based curricula, and is supported by a volunteer corps, a donor community, and the Orchid Legacy Society planned-giving program. Lan Su participates in Museums for All and Arts for All (EBT/WIC cardholders $5 admission, up to four per card) and offers a $2 admission discount to active-duty military, veterans, and their immediate family members with valid ID.
