Organisation Profile and Historical Background
The Ontario Rock Garden & Hardy Plant Society (ORG&HPS) is a Canadian specialist horticultural society based in Ontario and an active chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS), devoted to the cultivation, propagation and popularisation of alpine plants, rock-garden plants and their associated hardy perennials. ORG&HPS, headquartered on the Lawrence Avenue East campus of the Toronto Botanical Garden, has for several decades convened rock-garden and alpine-plant enthusiasts from across Ontario through monthly meetings, a members-only seed exchange, an annual print and digital journal, a Plant of the Month cultivar profile series and a roster of guest speakers drawn from leading Canadian and international horticulturists. As a chartered Canadian chapter of NARGS, ORG&HPS contributes to the international rock-garden network and participates in the NARGS Seed Exchange programme on behalf of its membership.
Board of Directors and Meeting Schedule
ORG&HPS is governed by an elected Board of Directors drawn from the general membership; the 2026 board comprises Chair Carol Clark, Vice-chair Erika Schroedersecker, Past Chair Barbara Peat, Treasurer Lee Vanspronsen and Directors Sherill Allard, Beatrice Beaubien, Pat de Valence, Laura Grant, Jan Hendrikse and Lucille Yates, with Lannie Messervey as Member-at-large. ORG&HPS operates the ORG&HPS Seed Exchange (Seedex), a members-only seed programme that offers up to sixty seed packets per order for fifteen Canadian dollars with priority given to members who donate at least five kinds of seed in a given year; regulations restrict orchid seeds to Canadian destinations and impose a fifty-packet ceiling for United States residents under the Small Lots of Seed Permit scheme. The Plant of the Month programme provides cultivar-by-cultivar notes on hardy garden plants, exemplified by the July 2026 profile of Acer pseudoplatanus ‘Esk Sunset’, a New Zealand-originated sycamore maple prized for its salmon-pink spring foliage and mottled pink-green-cream summer variegation.
