About the Arboretum

The JC Raulston Arboretum is a nationally acclaimed botanic garden of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University. It is dedicated to collecting, evaluating, and selecting superior landscape plants adapted for the southeastern United States.

The Arboretum is one of the largest and most diverse collections of garden plants in the Southeast, and serves as a living laboratory for NC State students and faculty. Open every day of the year with free admission, it ranks among the top things to do in Raleigh.

Garden Overview

The main garden occupies approximately 10 acres (about 4 hectares) at 4415 Beryl Road, Raleigh. An additional 10-acre research plot at NC State University’s Lake Wheeler Road Field Laboratory supports ongoing evaluation trials of trees and shrubs.

Plants from around the world are collected and assessed for landscape performance before being released to the green industry and the public.

Major Garden Areas

The garden features diverse areas including Asian Valley, Butterfly Garden, Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, Mixed Border, Winter Garden, and Xeric Garden, among many others.

The red lace-leaf Japanese maple (Acer palmatum Dissectum Atropurpureum Group), strongly associated with J.C. Raulston, serves as the symbol of the JC Raulston Arboretum.

Plant Database and Resources

The JCRA offers extensive online plant databases with thousands of species suitable for Southern landscapes, searchable by name, classification, or characteristics.

A “Choice Plants” program promotes special selections through local nurseries, and rare plants are available through the annual plant auction. The annual Winter Symposium brings together horticulture experts from around the world.

Educational Programs

The Arboretum provides educational programs for all levels — from beginner workshops to professional symposia. Topics include container gardening, wildlife-friendly garden design, and meditation garden creation.

International garden tours (such as the Swiss Alps trip) and annual events like the Birdhouse Competition offer unique hands-on experiences.

Membership and Support

Memberships, donations, and sponsorships fund the Arboretum’s operations. Members enjoy exclusive events, plant sale discounts, and priority venue bookings.

The JC Raulston Arboretum’s mission is to diversify the landscape by sharing passion, plants, and knowledge to plan—and plant for a better world.
