Library Sections and Services

Hosta Library was founded in 1999 by Bob Axmear, who envisioned a website where every named hosta cultivar would have real photos available for reference. Today it is maintained by two librarians, Carol Brashear and Bill Meyer, under the Wisconsin Hosta Society. The site is independent of any authority or country and is freely available to hosta enthusiasts worldwide, averaging more than 1,000 unique visitors daily.

The library contains photographs of thousands of hosta cultivars contributed by growers around the world; each entry includes multiple images (leaf form, leaf color, flower color, seasonal changes), cultivar name, originator, registration year, and a brief history. All photos are credited to the contributing photographer below the image.

Cultivar Library, Reading Room and Library Team

The library is organized into four major sections that together form the most comprehensive information resource on the Genus Hosta. Cultivar Photo Library features thousands of named hosta cultivars in alphabetical order with multiple real-plant photographs showing leaf shape, variegation pattern, flower color, and seasonal progression. Scientific Research contains over 100 research papers organized into six categories — General, Pest and Disease, Propagation, Genetics, Medicinal-Toxicological, and Leaf Color Regulation in Chimera Hostas — linking to ResearchGate, PubMed, HortScience, ScienceDirect, NCBI and other authoritative databases. Reading Room holds 30-plus original articles on Bob Axmear memorial (1951-2017), the Alex Summers Award story, Paul Aden breeder profile, Hosta Collecting in Japan, hybridizing, seed growing, container overwintering, dividing techniques, HostaVirus X (HVX), Southern Blight and other disease topics. Authors include Bill Meyer, Carol Brashear, Warren Pollock, Mikiko Lockwood and W. George Schmid. Practical Tools include the Fahrenheit/Celsius temperature converter and Freefind site search; Links Directory lists 47 US nurseries, 14 Canadian nurseries, 25 European nurseries, 4 Japanese nurseries, 1 Australian/New Zealand nursery, plus 70-plus hosta societies, 20-plus enthusiast Facebook groups, and educational resources. Hosta Library was created by the late founder Bob Axmear, who received the American Hosta Society highest honor — the Alex J. Summers Award in 2010 — for his outstanding contributions to hosta culture. After Bob passing on January 17, 2017, daily maintenance was taken over by librarians Carol Brashear and Bill Meyer. Bill Meyer is a leading author on HostaVirus X (HVX) and hosta disease research; Carol Brashear handles article editing and image review. Together they continue Bob legacy of operating the world largest public knowledge base for the Genus Hosta.

Global Community and Educational Resources

The links directory connects visitors to a worldwide network of hosta expertise — 47 US nurseries including established operations such as Plant Delights, Savory Gardens, Sebright Gardens, Klehm Song Sparrow and Hallson Gardens; 14 Canadian operations spanning Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia; 25 European specialty nurseries across the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and Belgium; 4 Japanese sources plus 1 Australian-New Zealand nursery. The directory also lists 70-plus hosta societies (American Hosta Society, British Hosta/Hemerocallis Society, Ontario Hosta Society, German Hosta Society, Dutch Hosta Society, Japan Hosta Society, Wisconsin Hosta Society and many regional chapters); 20-plus Facebook enthusiast groups covering ID, breeding, mini hostas, streaked hostas, red hostas and container culture; plus educational resources including Hosta College classes, Hosta Patents, MyHostas database, Find My Hosta, USDA Hardiness Zone Map and the Hallson Forum.

Photo Copyright and Usage Rules

All photos in the library are the property of the contributing photographer and protected under international copyright law. Visitors may save images to a personal computer, but any public display (including forum embedding) requires written permission from the photographer. Embedded links to individual images or pages are not permitted for any use — visitors should link only to the HostaLibrary homepage or specific pages. This copyright foundation has kept the library running stably for over 25 years.
