(Award for Excellence in Hybridizing)。

(5 Cities Orchid Sale and Show,尼波莫高中)等外州分会场设摊,为未能亲临圣巴巴拉的爱好者提供近距离接触展品的机会。

Cal-Orchid, Inc. is a family-owned wholesale and retail orchid nursery located at 1251 Orchid Drive, Santa Barbara, California, founded in 1987 by James and Lauris Rose. Set on 50,000 square feet of growing space one mile off US Highway 101, the nursery benefits from the cool, foggy Mediterranean climate of the Santa Barbara coast. Cal-Orchid is internationally recognized for its exceptionally diverse inventory, its long-running active breeding program, and the spectacular displays it brings to orchid shows across the United States and abroad.

Four Decades of Orchid Heritage

Cal-Orchid was established in 1987 when James and Lauris Rose purchased a former Cymbidium cut-flower ranch on Orchid Drive from father-and-son team Bob and John Rowe. The Roses had previously honed their commercial orchid skills at the neighboring Santa Barbara Orchid Estate in the early 1970s, and they converted the property into a specialty nursery built around Cattleyas, Laelias, Epidendrums and other genera. James Rose passed away on January 2, 2025; the 77th Santa Barbara International Orchid Show was dedicated to his memory. Together the couple had also received the rare American Orchid Society Award for Excellence in Hybridizing for their work with Laelia anceps, and James served on the AOS Conservation Committee as well as the organizing committee of the Japan Grand Prix of Orchids.

A Signature Breeding Program and a 5,000-Pod Library

The nursery’s reputation rests on a breeding program that has produced an unrivaled stream of new hybrids. The Roses and their team travelled the world in search of parent plants, and over the years have submitted more than 5,000 seed pods to flasking laboratories and have sent 500+ individual cultivars on for mericloning. The flagship output is the famous “Pacific” line of reedstem Epidendrums, whose concentrated color range and outdoor tolerance have earned Cal-Orchid the nickname “The Epi-Center” among enthusiasts. The collection also spans African and Malagasy orchids, Cattleya species and hybrids, Laelia anceps, Neofinetia falcata, Lycastes, Sobralia, and a wide assortment of miscellaneous genera rarely found under one roof in the United States.

Show Schedule and Open House Weekends

Cal-Orchid is a perennial exhibitor at the top orchid shows in North America and Asia, including the Santa Barbara International Orchid Show (March 20-22), the Sacramento Orchid Society show at the Carmichael Elks Lodge, the Huntington Botanical Gardens Fall Show, the Japan Grand Prix of Orchids, and World Orchid Conferences. During Santa Barbara show week the nursery hosts a three-day Open House and sets up a triple sales booth at Earl Warren Showgrounds just off the 101 freeway, offering everything from cell-pack seedlings to multi-spike specimen Laelia anceps. Cal-Orchid also travels to regional events such as the 5 Cities Orchid Sale and Show at Nipomo High School, bringing the same award-quality plants to orchid buyers in the central California coast.

Nursery Visits and Mail Order

The Santa Barbara nursery is open to the public by appointment from Thursday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; visits are arranged by phone at 805-967-1312 or by email at calorchid@cox.net. Inside the 50,000-square-foot growing range, plants are grouped by recommended growing conditions — indoor windowsills, outdoor garden beds, frost-tolerant yards, or warm greenhouse epiphyte mounts — with a particularly strong focus on temperature-tolerant Cattleyas, Laelias and the bamboo-like Sobralias from Mexico to Peru. Cal-Orchid also retails AAAA-grade New Zealand sphagnum moss (One Mile Moss) in 3 kg bags, and ships retail orders via FedEx Express. Hawaii and Puerto Rico customers must supply an import permit and pay a US$55 Phytosanitary Certificate fee per shipment.
