网站主旨很直白——「Built by real gardeners for real gardeners」,由真园丁自己维护给自己看。

About the Site

Real Gardeners is a grassroots UK gardening community that first came online in 2001. It was started by a small group of hobby gardeners who wanted somewhere to share what they were learning, and it has stayed non-commercial ever since. Running costs are covered by small donations from members. The stated mission is plain: “Built by real gardeners for real gardeners”, a website of the people, by the people, for the people who actually get their hands in the soil.

Maintainer and Hosting

The site was put together in 2001 by UK gardener Jane Taubman, whose name appears in the site metadata, and she has carried the editorial and technical load ever since. The site is hosted on Krystal, a British hosting provider, and the page footer reads “Copyright © Real Gardeners 2010-2026”. Alongside the gardening library Jane maintains a few reference pages on poisonous plants, irritant plants, plant names and similar look-up topics. The discussion forum itself, which has moved a couple of times over the years, currently runs on the Tapatalk group platform and requires a separate sign-up.

Forums and Photo of the Month

The forums are where most members spend their time. Topics are split into a few rough sections covering vegetable gardening, ornamental gardening and a “show off your achievements” area where people post pictures of what they have grown. Visitors can browse without registering; only posting requires an account. Each month the General Forum runs a small photo competition, and the winners are pulled out into a dedicated page so that the more photographically inclined members have a regular showcase.

Poisonous and Irritant Plants

The poisonous plants section is one of the reasons the site has been recommended by several of the UK’s mainstream garden magazines. The list is sorted alphabetically by botanical name and covers common ornamental plants that are toxic or irritant, each with an illustration and a note on how dangerous it is; entries marked with an asterisk are potentially fatal. The page reminds readers that, if poisoning is suspected, a sample of the plant should be taken to the hospital and the victim should not be made to vomit. A companion page on irritant plants covers species more likely to cause skin or mucous-membrane reactions, such as primulas, daphne and many euphorbias, where wearing gloves before pruning is a sensible precaution.

Reference Library and Wildlife Pages

The Reference Library is the long-form archive built up from forum posts over the years. It is organised by category: annuals and biennials; bulbs, corms, tubers and rhizomes; perennials; shrubs; trees; hedges; lawns; water gardening; fruit and vegetables; propagation; pests and diseases; weeds and other thugs; soil and compost; climate and microclimate; hard landscaping; greenhouses, polytunnels and cold frames; and garden design. Two companion sections on Wildlife Friends and Wildlife Foes list the common garden animals that help or hinder the gardener, with simple illustrations and short notes on how to attract the helpful ones and deter the others. For anyone trying to keep a wildlife-friendly, low-intervention garden the two wildlife pages are particularly handy.
