Foundation and Status as a Trans-State National Park
Nationalpark Harz sits in the low mountain range of central-northern Germany and is one of the largest forested national parks in the country. It is also the first German national park that spans two federal states. The eastern part lies in Sachsen-Anhalt and was designated in 1990, covering around 8,900 hectares; the western part was set up in 1994 by the federal government of Niedersachsen and covers around fifteen thousand eight hundred hectares. The merged park totals roughly twenty-four thousand seven hundred hectares and belongs to the European Natura 2000 network.
Terrain and Representative Landscapes
The park stretches from the foothills near Herzberg in the south to the northern slopes near Bad Harzburg and Ilsenburg, capturing a complete gradient of central European mountain ecology. Elevation rises from about two hundred and forty meters at the northern edge and two hundred and seventy meters at the southern rim to one thousand one hundred and forty-one meters at the summit of Brocken, the highest peak in northern Germany. Beech forests dominate the lower flanks and make ideal hiking terrain in spring and autumn. Around the Brocken plateau, alpine mires, spruce stands and exposed granite shape the upper landscape, while the Harz high moors include some of the best preserved raised bogs in the country.
Wildlife Diversity and Forest Succession
Forests cover nearly ninety-seven percent of the park, with roughly ten thousand documented plant and animal species. Beech, spruce and mixed stands form the broad vegetation base, while lynx and European wildcat maintain stable populations in the deeper valleys. Following the worldwide national park motto of letting nature be nature, former economic spruce monocultures are gradually withdrawn and replaced by naturally regenerating broadleaf woodland. Deadwood and standing snags are deliberately retained as habitat for fungi, saproxylic insects and woodpeckers, lifting overall habitat complexity.
Visitor Centres, Hiking and Winter Activities
A network of national park visitor centres and national park houses stretches across the region, with HohneHof near Drei Annen Hohne station being a popular starting point for guided walks and family discovery trails. About six hundred kilometers of marked trails run from lowland beech forest up to the Brocken summit. When snow cover is sufficient, the park grooms around one hundred and fifty kilometers of cross-country ski trails, fifty kilometers of ungroomed ski touring routes and eighty-eight kilometers of winter hiking paths. Lifts and pistes near Sankt Andreasberg and Torfhaus add downhill and toboggan options.
Environmental Education and Interpretation
The park is run by the Nationalparkverwaltung Harz, supported by a permanent team of about thirty-nine rangers. Junior Ranger, Nationalpark Guides and the Brunnenbachsmühle youth forest house programmes reach schoolchildren, families and adult visitors with hands-on ecology and interpretation. The administration is based in Wernigerode and handles public enquiries, monitoring and the production of visitor materials. Travellers can check weather, forest fire warning level, temporary trail closures and the event calendar on the park platform before heading out.
