Overview and Purpose
The Bonsai Museum Duesseldorf (bonsai-museum duesseldorf e.V.) is an open-air museum run by a registered association in the Hamm district of Duesseldorf, Germany. Its stated aim is to bring bonsai culture to a broad public and, in doing so, to encourage exchange between Japanese and European culture. The museum is non-profit in nature, and its day-to-day affairs are handled by the association together with a support association (Foerderverein).
Site and Open-Air Teaching Path
The exhibition area covers about 1,500 square metres, laid out as a teaching path (Lehrpfad). Along the route stand 34 information panels and more than 120 bonsai trees, some over a hundred years old, shaped both in classical Asian styles and in the approaches European designers later worked out. The path runs through the history and philosophy of bonsai, tree forms, styling techniques, everyday care and the species that suit different European and Asian climates. The grounds sit beside the Rhine dike and the Duesseldorf section of the Jakobsweg pilgrim route, easy to reach on foot or by bicycle.
Collection, Special Exhibitions and Awards
Besides the permanent collection of trees and viewing stones (suiseki), the museum invites bonsai designers to mount special exhibitions each year. Past shows have featured work by Walter Pall, Ralf Beckers and Bert Lehmacher, and have set paintings alongside bonsai. The museum also issues special prizes at events such as the national exhibition of the Bonsai Club Deutschland (BCD), the North Rhine-Westphalia bonsai days and the Go Shun-Ten show near Munich, aimed at encouraging younger designers. In 2012 it took part in the Floriade in the Netherlands, a garden show held once every ten years, and came away with several awards.
Founder, Board and Partners
The driving figure is founder Werner M. Busch, the association’s first chairperson and a recognised bonsai teacher, demonstrator and author who set up the International Bonsai School Duesseldorf in 1984. The board and teaching team also include photographer Bastian Busch, Dirk Dabringhausen, winner of the BCD young talent award in 2009, restorer Manfred van Eick, and curator Falko Hamann. The support association is chaired by Juergen Stodt with Axel Paduch as deputy; the two hold posts in the regional bonsai association of North Rhine-Westphalia and in the Bonsai Club Deutschland respectively.
Opening Hours, Admission and Visiting
The museum opens Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 14:30 to 18:30, Thursdays from 10:00 to 20:00, Saturdays from 9:00 to 17:00 and Sundays from 10:00 to 17:00. Admission is 5 euros for adults and 3 euros for children, pupils and groups of three or more. It stands in the Hamm district near the Rhine dike, not far from Duesseldorf’s Little Tokyo quarter, so it can be bundled with other Japan-related stops in one trip. Most open days fall between spring and autumn, so it is worth checking the current year’s schedule before setting out.
