BVB Substrates

(Wageningen University and Research)、HAS

From 1908 Straw Supplies to the 1967 Launch of the BVB Substrates Brand

The Dutch family business BVB Substrates traces its roots back to 1908, when Maarten van Buuren founded a company in the Netherlands to supply cattle farms with fresh straw; the business expanded steadily over the following years. In 1940, Bas van Buuren and his brothers took over the family firm and shifted its focus to horticultural growing media. Bas continued to run the company on his own and, in 1967, formally launched the BVB Substrates brand. Over the following decades, this Dutch brand gradually became the leading supplier of growing media in the Netherlands and surrounding countries, expanding overseas and sourcing raw materials from around the world, with five production sites eventually established in the Netherlands.

The 2019 Merger with Finnish Kekkilä to Form the Kekkilä-BVB Group

On 9 October 2018, Finnish Vapo Group (now Neova Group) and the van Buuren family investment company Nielson Belegging en Beheer jointly announced the merger of their horticultural businesses. On 4 January 2019, the new company Kekkilä-BVB Oy was formally established in Vantaa, Finland, with Vapo holding 70 percent of the shares and the van Buuren family holding the remaining 30 percent. BVB Substrates, together with Finland’s Kekkilä Professional and Sweden’s Hasselfors Garden, became one of the two main brands serving professional growers under the new group. In February 2022, Neova acquired the remaining 30 percent from Nielson, making Kekkilä-BVB a wholly owned subsidiary of Neova.

Seven Crop Categories and a Tailor-Made Growing Media System

BVB Substrates serves professional growers across seven product categories: medical cannabis, mushroom casing soil, ornamental plants, propagation and young plants, soft fruits, tree nursery, and vegetables and leafy greens. The group operates twelve production sites across the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Germany and Spain, and sells to growers in over one hundred countries. All standard mixtures can be tailored to fit the exact conditions of each greenhouse, with adjustments taking into account crop requirements, grower preferences, water quality and availability, growing and irrigation methods, and climatic constraints such as temperature and humidity.

R&D and a Network of University Partners

A large R&D department develops and tests every BVB Substrates product, with samples taken from each batch before it leaves the production sites. The department works closely with Wageningen University and Research, HAS University of Applied Sciences, and Proefcentrum Hoogstraten in Belgium, and conducts practical experiments in its own phytotron and testing greenhouses. Once a new mixture has proven useful in these research settings, it is trialled with customers in their own greenhouses. All Sales Advisers come from horticultural backgrounds, having either grown up in a grower family or gained hands-on growing experience themselves, so they can offer practical guidance on substrate selection and day-to-day crop management.

A European Growing-Media Leader with a Global Footprint

Kekkilä-BVB is now the European leader in horticulture, serving professional greenhouse growers, consumers and landscapers across three main business areas, with annual net sales of around EUR 250 million and roughly 500 employees. In addition to BVB Substrates, the group’s portfolio includes consumer brands such as Kekkilä Garden, Hasselfors Garden, Jardino and Veenbaas, as well as G&C Materials for raw-material and animal-care customers. BVB Substrates itself runs sales offices in the Netherlands, the United States, Spain, Belgium, Germany and Australia, exporting its products to more than eighty countries under the BVB Substrates brand.
