Garden Owners and History
OpdeHaar Open Garden sits in Hoevelaken, Gelderland, in the eastern Netherlands, and is maintained as a private collection garden by John and Joyce Ramsbotham. Visits are by appointment only. The garden lies inside the Hoevelakense Bos, on the boundary between the provinces of Gelderland and Utrecht, and grew out of a historical rabattenbos, the traditional raised peat-bog layout once used for horticultural drainage in this part of the country.
Eight Connected Gardens
The nearly 2-hectare site is divided into eight adjoining gardens, each with a distinct planting and mood. The Millennium Garden (Millenniumtuin) was laid out from 2000 and holds a large collection of hostas. The English-style borders use lilac, blue and pink in a symmetric layout. The raised rabattenbos has 18 drainage ditches, wet in winter and dry in summer, planted with shade-tolerant species. The fern garden and stumpery were expanded in 2020 alongside a new perennial bed and a pergola. The pond and rock garden date from 1993 and follow a Japanese aesthetic. The tropical border closes summer with bold exotics including a large banana. The rose garden centres on five rose beds enclosed by boxwood hedges still untouched by box blight. The Fire and Ice garden ends the visit with reds, oranges and yellows set against dark foliage and pale “ice” stones.
Plant Collection and Lectures
Across the eight gardens, more than 4500 different species of plants, trees and shrubs are grown, many of them labelled so visitors can identify the less common ones. OpdeHaar is best known for its woodland plants and shade-tolerant species. The Ramsbothams keep a set of illustrated slide presentations covering topics such as colour and contrast without flowers, shade-tolerant plants, exotic garden plants, plants for the future, and the evolution of plants on Earth, and they accept invitations to lecture for garden clubs and small groups (eight to around fifty people).
Affiliations and Media Coverage
OpdeHaar is a member of, and supported by, the Nederlandse Tuinen Stichting (Dutch Gardens Foundation), the local Groei en Bloei branch at Nijkerk, and the UK Royal Horticultural Society. In June 2015 the Belgian French-language broadcaster RTBF filmed on site, and the segment aired in the programme Jardins et Loisirs on 24 January 2016. Dutch public broadcaster KRO-NCRV featured OpdeHaar twice on BinnensteBuiten, first in winter (broadcast 23 February 2016) and again during a rainy May (broadcast 11 May 2017), bringing the gardens to a wider television audience.
Visiting and Appointments
The garden is open by appointment only, with no fixed public opening days. It is particularly suited to garden clubs and small groups of eight to around fifty people; a full visit typically takes around two hours. The website publishes monthly highlights albums covering all twelve months of the year (januari through december), useful for planning a visit at any season. All visits and enquiries are arranged through the garden’s official contact channels.
