协会概况

托皮卡地区水花园协会 (Topeka Area Water Garden Society, 缩写 TAWGS) 是美国堪萨斯州托皮卡及周边 Shawnee County 一带由水景花园爱好者组成的同业团体, 1989 年起持续运转, 核心工作是推广池塘 / 瀑布 / 喷泉这些家庭后院水景园艺。

正式名称 Topeka Area Water Garden Society (TAWGS), 也称托皮卡地区水花园协会, 服务范围覆盖美国堪萨斯州 Shawnee County 及周边县。协会性质为本地非营利园艺爱好者同业团体, 不雇佣专职员工, 由会员志愿者共同组织日常事务, 重点工作是家庭后院水景花园的建造、维护与社区推广。

协会核心价值观强调两方面: 一是把水景园艺 (特别是池塘生态, 含锦鲤、睡莲、过滤系统) 作为本土家庭园艺的延伸来推动; 二是把协会活动产生的资金直接用于社区公共水景花园的修建与维护。2019 年的旧版源站页面就把 Pond Tour 收益描述为 “used to help build or maintain water gardens in our community”, 这是协会多年的公开承诺。

协会没有正式编制, 靠一群对锦鲤养殖、睡莲品种与池塘生态感兴趣的本地园艺爱好者共同维护; 最具号召力的活动是每年 6 月底举办的 Pond Tour (水景花园参观之旅), 已经连续办了三十多届, 每届挑出 7 个当地花园 (一般 5 个私人宅院 + 2 个公共花园) 公开开放两天供会员和访客串门, 收益全部返回到社区, 用于在公共空间修建或维护公共水景花园。

主要活动

Annual Pond Tour (年度水景花园参观之旅) 是 TAWGS 一整年里规模最大、面向公众的活动, 每年 6 月最后一个周末举行, 持续两天 (例如第 31 届是 6 月 25–26 日, 第 32 届计划在 6 月 24–25 日), 现场由花园主人或协会讲解员说明池塘建造、瀑布水循环、睡莲 / 荷花品种、鱼类饲养等设计思路, 鼓励访客在自己家里模仿改建。

Monthly Meeting (月度会员例会) 一般安排在每月第三个周三晚上 7 点, 地点在 Ward-Meade 历史园林的 Preston Hale Room。议程通常包括上个月 Pond Tour 复盘、协会账目公布、下一阶段活动筹备, 以及一节由本地专家带来的客座讲座, 历年讲者包括 K-State (Kansas State University) 昆虫学教授 Dr. Ray Cloyd (蜻蜓生态)、Washburn University 的 Benjamin Reed (箱龟保护) 等。

Plant Swap (植物交换) 是 TAWGS 在春末夏初举办的轻量级公益活动, 鼓励会员把自己多余的睡莲、荷花、岸边植物带到例会现场互换, 降低新手起步成本, 同时也是新会员彼此认识的渠道。Tulips at Twilight 期间的花园灯光鉴赏属于 Ward-Meade 与 Topeka Parks & Recreation 联合活动, 协会承担组织参观环节, 通常以分组散场替代正式月会。

Community Service Day (社区服务日) 配合 Topeka Beautification / Keep America Beautiful 项目, 在 Ted Ensley Gardens 等公共水景场地安排 Weed Elimination Day (除草日), 上午 9 点到中午 12 点集中清理有害入侵植物, 维护协会支持修建的公共水景; 在 Hope And Healing Academy (10437 SW 53rd St, Topeka) 这类社区机构的庭院水景也是协会会员的志愿维护对象。

Topeka Area Water Garden Society

The Topeka Area Water Garden Society (TAWGS) is a community of water gardening enthusiasts based in and around Topeka, Kansas. Founded in 1989 and active continuously since, the society is best known for hosting an annual Pond Tour each June, when roughly seven local gardens (typically a mix of private residences and public landscapes) open to the public for a self-paced weekend visit. Anyone with an interest in ponds, koi, water plants or backyard landscaping is welcome at any monthly meeting.

Topeka Area Water Garden Society (TAWGS) is a Topeka-based volunteer society founded in 1989. Major activities

Annual Pond Tour. Held the last full weekend of June. The 31st edition (2019) ran June 25–26 with seven gardens open over two days; the 32nd edition is scheduled for June 24–25 of the following year. Each stop on the tour is hosted by the garden’s owner or a TAWGS docent who explains pond construction, filtration, planting and fish husbandry.

Monthly meetings. Third Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. in the Preston Hale Room at Ward-Meade. Meetings combine society business, planning for upcoming Pond Tour sites and a guest lecture. Recent speakers include Dr. Ray Cloyd of Kansas State University (dragonfly ecology), Benjamin Reed of Washburn University (box turtle conservation), and a series of Master Gardeners presenting at TSCPL on topics such as low-water and drought-tolerant plant selection and garden photography.

Plant Swap and seasonal field events. Held once per year, typically in May or June, on the lawn outside the Ward-Meade meeting room. Members bring excess lilies, marginals and oxygenators in labeled containers; newcomers can leave with a free starter tray after signing up for the newsletter. The Tulips at Twilight evening garden tour at Ward-Meade replaces the regular business meeting in some Aprils.

Community service. In late June TAWGS partners with Topeka Beautification/Keep America Beautiful for weed elimination and shoreline cleanup at Ted Ensley Gardens, with volunteers meeting at 37th and West Edge Road from 9 a.m. to noon. The society also occasionally donates labor and materials to install small water features at community institutions such as Hope And Healing Academy.

The society has kept to its roughly thirty-pond-tour-and-twelve-monthly-meetings-per-year rhythm since 1989 without interruption, including through the 2020 pandemic year when programs were held outdoors; it remains the most stable volunteer water gardening group in northeast Kansas.
