2026 季苗圃的”蝴蝶美人”专题系列收录了 Agastache foeniculum(茴藿香)、Asclepias 属(马利筋)、Liatris 属(蛇鞭菊)、Lupinus perennis(野羽扇豆)、Monarda fistulosa(野薄荷)、Phlox pilosa(草原福禄考)、Pycnanthemum virginianum(弗吉尼亚山薄荷)、Silphium perfoliatum(杯形向日葵)、Solidago 属(一枝黄花)、Verbena hastata(蓝马鞭草)等逾 30 种蜜源与寄主植物;Gallery 中另展示了 Campanula rotundifolia(圆叶风铃草)、Baptisia bracteata(奶油靛蓝)、Polemonium reptans(希腊缬草)、Geum triflorum(草原之烟)、Sanguinaria canadensis(血根草)、Tradescantia ohiensis(俄亥俄紫露草)等适合林缘、草原与湿地修复的多年生野花与观赏草。

Nursery Overview
Kinnickinnic Natives is a small destination nursery located on the banks of the Kinnickinnic River in River Falls, St. Croix County, Wisconsin, less than 30 minutes from Saint Paul, Minnesota. Run as a husband-and-wife team by Wayne and Michelle, the nursery has been serving the St. Croix community with locally adapted native perennials, wildflowers, and grasses since 1996. All plants are propagated from seed collected on the farm or from sources within about 50 miles, making them well suited to local soil, groundwater, and pollinator habitat. The nursery is open seasonally: May and June on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and in July and August on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Plant Selection
The nursery sells strictly local native species (locals only): no annuals, no branded or royalty-earning perennials, and no hostas. Most plants are grown in 3-inch pots, with forbs and shrubs starting at $4 and grasses and sedges at $3.50; plants that need more root space are shifted to 4-, 5-, or 6-inch pots. The 2026 Butterfly Beauties specialty line lists more than 30 nectar and host species, including Agastache foeniculum (Anise Hyssop), Asclepias species (Milkweeds), Liatris species, Lupinus perennis (Wild Lupine), Monarda fistulosa (Wild Bergamot), Phlox pilosa (Downy Phlox), Pycnanthemum virginianum (Mountain Mint), Silphium perfoliatum (Cup Plant), Solidago species, and Verbena hastata (Blue Vervain). The Gallery highlights additional species for woodland, prairie, and shoreline use, such as Campanula rotundifolia (Harebells), Baptisia bracteata (Cream Indigo), Polemonium reptans (Jacob’s Ladder), Geum triflorum (Prairie Smoke), Sanguinaria canadensis (Bloodroot), and Tradescantia ohiensis (Ohio Spiderwort).
Owner’s Background
Wayne and Michelle, the husband-and-wife team behind the nursery, set Kinnickinnic Natives apart from a typical greenhouse: their plant knowledge comes from long, hands-on experience in the local ecosystem rather than from textbooks. The nursery brands itself as a destination nursery and emphasizes that its staff can speak to the seed source, ecology, and landscape role of every plant it sells. Customers who visit can ask about the origin of any plant, and the owners handle questions on pot size and availability in person during the open season.
Business Philosophy
The nursery is run with a family-farm philosophy built on the idea of “right plant, right place.” Wayne and Michelle see native plants, pollinators, birds, and groundwater as parts of a single interdependent system, and they deliberately avoid cultivars bred for flower color, size, or adaptability, sticking instead to true local species that retain the traits pollinators actually use. By using farm-collected seed, keeping the standard pot size small to improve transplant success, and growing most plants on to bloom in their first year, the nursery makes larger garden and restoration installations more affordable.
