History and Botanical Tradition
Leach Botanical Garden is located in southeast Portland, Oregon, and was established in 1936 at John and Lilla Leach’s former home, Sleepy Hollow. Lilla trained in botany and joined John on plant-collecting and botanical excursions in the Olympic, Wallowa, and Siskiyou Mountains. During expeditions in southwestern Oregon, she documented five plants previously unknown to Western science. The Garden continues this tradition by connecting botanical observation, horticulture, and public learning.
Garden Zones and Landscapes
The approximately 17-acre Garden follows the terrain around Johnson Creek and is organized into several distinct areas. The Upper Garden includes accessible paths, a Pollinator Garden, Aerial Tree Walk, Covered Arbor, and outdoor fireplace. The Manor House level centers on the historic home built in 1936, while the South Garden connects with woodland paths. The East 5 serves as a restoration zone, community habitat project, and outdoor classroom; Far Meadow provides open space for children’s play and nature observation.
Plant Collections and Living Landscape
The Garden combines Pacific Northwest native plants with horticultural collections. Douglas firs, Oregon grape, sword ferns, and other woodland plants appear across the forest, streamside, pollinator garden, historic garden, and restoration areas. More than 2,000 varieties of plants are represented. The collection is experienced as a living landscape in which plants, terrain, seasons, and wildlife habitat can be observed together, including four heritage trees with historical significance.
Botanical Exploration and Research Significance
The Garden’s scientific importance is rooted in the botanical work of the Leaches. Lilla’s discovery of Kalmiopsis leachiana, a rare plant restricted to serpentine soils in the Siskiyou Mountains, contributed to the botanical understanding and protection of the region and supported the later creation of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area. Today, the East 5 links land restoration, community science, and environmental education. Plant collections, ecological observation, and habitat stewardship provide practical settings for learning about Pacific Northwest plants and conservation.
Public Education and Visiting
Through tours, art workshops, school and youth programs, and other public activities, the Garden turns its collections and scientific stories into participatory learning. More than 32,000 visitors are welcomed each year, supported by over 20 staff members and more than 50 regular volunteers. Because slopes, stairs, and narrow uneven woodland paths connect the Upper Garden, Manor House level, and South Garden, visitors should consult the official site for current hours, accessibility, and program information. The Upper Garden’s Pollinator Garden, Aerial Tree Walk, and Far Meadow are useful areas for planning a family visit.
