About the Organization
The Azalea Society of America (ASA) is a national horticultural society in the United States dedicated to the genus Rhododendron, with a particular focus on both deciduous and evergreen azaleas. The Society welcomes home gardeners, plant collectors, horticulture students and professional growers, and emphasizes cross-regional collaboration and knowledge sharing among azalea enthusiasts across North America and beyond.
History and Scope
Founded as a non-profit membership organization, ASA operates through a network of regional chapters that span much of the United States, together with members in Canada, Europe and Asia. An elected Board of Directors and the chapter presidents manage Society affairs, while an Annual Convention is held each spring in a different host city, featuring garden tours, lectures by noted azalea hybridizers, rare-plant sales and social events open to members and the general public.
Publications and Member Benefits
The Society’s quarterly journal The Azalean (ISSN 1085‑5343) is published and mailed to members in spring, summer, fall and winter; each issue runs approximately 24 full-color pages and covers azalea culture, hybridization, propagation, landscape use, new introductions and chapter news. Members gain access to a searchable index of articles from 1979 to the present, with older issues available online and recent issues in print. A long-running Seed Exchange program lets members swap seeds of uncommon deciduous azaleas, while the Azalea Research Fund provides small grants to university and individual researchers working on azalea-related topics.
Educational Resources and the Legacy Project
The ASA website hosts freely available resources covering azalea basics, a cultivar database, propagation techniques, pest and disease diagnosis, the Azalea City Program and a directory of public azalea gardens. The Legacy Project systematically documents the unregistered or rarely distributed hybrids developed by twentieth-century American hybridizers — including the Aromi, Back Acres, Glen Dale, Huang, Satsuki, Linwood Hardy, Varnadoe and Wilson50 lines — coordinating volunteer teams to gather historical records, propagate plants and reintroduce these overlooked American hybrids to modern gardens.
Networks and Outreach
ASA engages with international rhododendron and azalea networks, maintaining exchanges with the Royal Horticultural Society, the American Rhododendron Society and sister organizations in Japan, Korea and Europe. Through virtual Zoom conventions, recorded garden tours and local chapter open days, the Society welcomes enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels.
