著名生态学家Aldo Leopold(1887-1948)曾担任首任研究总监。

Basic Information

The University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum, established in 1932 and formally dedicated on June 17, 1934, encompasses 1,200 acres of prairies, oak savannas, wetlands, and forests in Madison, Wisconsin. As the birthplace of ecological restoration, the Arboretum pioneered the concept of returning ecosystems to their pre-settlement condition.

History and Construction

Civilian Conservation Corps crews (1935-1941) transformed degraded farmland into diverse ecosystems, creating the world’s oldest restored prairie—Curtis Prairie—in 1935. The Arboretum pioneered prescribed fire management in the 1950s to maintain prairie ecosystems, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989.

Ecological Restoration Achievements

The UW Arboretum’s core mission is to restore and protect Wisconsin’s native ecosystems. Curtis Prairie is the world’s oldest restored prairie; oak savanna communities preserve the harmonious coexistence of tall oaks with understory herbaceous plants; Longenecker Lakeshore Wetland serves as important habitat for waterbirds and amphibians.

Community Engagement and Education

The Arboretum welcomes over 150,000 visitors annually through rich citizen science programs and environmental education activities: monthly second Saturday Ecological Restoration Work Parties engage volunteers in weeding, seeding, and fire management; the Lilac Celebration in spring attracts many families; Full Moon Night Walks offer guided nocturnal explorations of the grounds.
