J. L. Hudson, Seedsman

About the Seed Bank

J. L. Hudson, Seedsman is a Public Access Seed Bank based in La Honda, California, USA—not a commercial seed company. It was founded in 1911 by Harry E. Saier in Michigan and is now in its 116th year. The bank has been operated by David Theodoropoulos and his colleague Ms. Calkins for the past 53 years, distributing seeds from the present location in La Honda, California. Guided by the motto “Preservation Through Dissemination,” the organization works to preserve botanical biodiversity, propagate and disseminate rare, threatened and endangered plants, conduct primary research into the biology of seeds, and preserve vanishing ethnobotanical knowledge of plant uses.

Mission & Conservation

The Statement of Purpose outlines seven major commitments—Preservation, Research, Education, Ethics, Society, Practice, and Activism. In-situ preservation is practiced at the bank’s own Las Sombras Biological Preserve, while ex-situ work involves the cultivation, propagation, dissemination and naturalization of at-risk plants and the distribution of crop germplasm. The bank also carries out original research into long-term seed storage and overcoming seed dormancy, and shares findings with other seed banks and the public. Educational work covers modern ecological and evolutionary theory, the common ancestry of all peoples, the threats posed by the privatization of biological resources, and the importance of vanishing ethnobotanical traditions.

Seed Catalog & Specialties

The annual catalog lists just over 1,000 species and varieties (down dramatically from the 15,000 held by Harry Saier in 1962), including native flowers, vines, trees, cacti, culinary herbs, heirloom vegetables, ornamentals, hardy perennials, medicinal plants and tropicals—organized alphabetically from A to Z, with separate vegetable and organic listings. The 2026 edition adds 80 new listings (18 of them vegetables), with the standard packet held at $2.50 for yet another year. The bank also uniquely distributes Gibberellic Acid-3 (GA-3), complete GA-3 priming kits and consumables, and carries a curated selection of books on edible, medicinal and ethnobotanical subjects. Seeds can be ordered online or by requesting a print catalog, subject to USDA and CDFA import requirements.

Licensing & Memorial

The seed bank operates under U.S. Department of Agriculture Import Permit #37-40343, California Department of Food and Agriculture Authorization to Sell Seed #0020, and CDFA License to Sell Nursery Stock #D3588.001—one of the few non-commercial U.S. institutions holding both seed and nursery stock permits. The website also hosts an “In Memoriam” page honoring Hugh Thompson, Jr. (1943–2006), the U.S. helicopter pilot who, with crew members Lawrence Colburn and Glenn Andreotta, intervened to stop the 1968 My Lai massacre, dedicating the memorial to the humanitarian values that inform the bank’s work.
