Benary在近200年历史中推出多项世界首创育种成果：1909年推出世界首个商业F1杂交观赏植物——秋海棠Primadonna®；1927年推出世界首个F1杂交蔬菜番茄”Heterosis”；1934年推出世界首个三倍体杂交纤维状秋海棠”Tausendschön”；1959年首创”Blue Point”种子处理工艺（其logo中的蓝色圆点即源于此）；1972年推出世界首个种子繁殖的球根秋海棠F1品种Nonstop®；2008年推出经百年育种积累的Begonia × benariensis BIG®。1994年成立美国销售子公司Ernst Benary of America，2009年收购美国Bodger Seeds，2010年在荷兰设立育种基地Benary Netherlands B.V.，2011年在危地马拉开设种子生产基地，2017年成立Benary+ Inc.负责北美直销，2021年在厦门建成18公顷综合产业园”唐巢（Tang Chao）”，2022年第六代传人Klaudia Benary-Redlefsen完成100%家族收购。

Now in its sixth generation, the firm specializes in the research, breeding, production and global distribution of ornamental flower seeds for professional growers and the horticultural industry, with seed shipped to more than 120 countries.Ernst Benary established the company in 1843 in Erfurt, Germany, originally under the name “Ernst Benary Samenzucht für Gartensamen und Pflanzen.” After World War II, Fritz Benary II re-founded the business in 1946 in Hann. Münden as “Ernst Benary Samenzucht GmbH.” Today the company employs roughly 700 people worldwide and presents itself as a multigenerational family-owned enterprise with nearly two centuries of history. The German word “Samenzucht” – seed cultivation – reflects the core activity of the firm.

Milestones in Breeding

Benary’s nearly 200-year history includes many world-first breeding achievements. In 1909 the company introduced the first commercial F1 hybrid ornamental – Begonia ‘Primadonna®’. In 1927 came the first F1 hybrid vegetable, the tomato ‘Heterosis’. In 1934 Benary released the first triploid F1 hybrid fibrous begonia ‘Tausendschön’. The 1959 launch of “Blue Point” seed treatment is still referenced by the blue dot in the Benary logo. In 1972 the world’s first F1 tuberous begonia raised from seed – Nonstop® – was introduced, followed in 2008 by Begonia × benariensis BIG®, the result of more than a century of begonia breeding. Ernst Benary of America was founded in 1994, Bodger Seeds was acquired in 2009, and Benary Netherlands B.V. was established in Venhuizen in 2010. A seed production facility opened in Guatemala in 2011, Benary+ Inc. was launched for direct North American sales in 2017, the 18-hectare “Tang Chao” floricultural industry park in Xiamen, China opened in 2021, and in 2022 Klaudia Benary-Redlefsen completed a 100% family buyout, taking full ownership of the company.

Plant Selection

Benary breeds mainly annual and perennial ornamental flower seeds, with additional ranges in pot plants, specialty cut flowers and a small selection of vegetables and herbs. Major genera include Begonia (the company’s flagship crop, with F1 series such as Solenia®, Nonstop®, BIG®, Funky®, Cocktail®, Sprint Plus, Super Olympia® and Illumination®), Cyclamen (Halios®, Latinia®, Sierra®), Petunia (a wide F1 assortment for pots and hanging baskets), Gazania (Zany™, Talent®), Celosia (Fresh Look, New Look®, Brainiac), Helianthus (Cutting Gold, Floristan), Callistephus (Benary’s Princess, Matador®, Fan®), Zinnia, Antirrhinum and the FastraX first-year-flowering perennial program introduced from 2002 onward, which includes Aquilegia Spring Magic®, Achillea Marshmallow™, Alchemilla Thriller and Astilbe series. Breeding is carried out at four stations – Hann. Münden (Germany), Venhuizen (Netherlands), Watsonville, California (USA) and Xiamen (China) – with regional trials conducted at numerous university and partner sites worldwide.

Global Reach and Sustainability

Benary distributes seed to more than 120 countries, with the strongest markets in Europe, North America and Asia. Beyond the four breeding stations, the company operates a seed production site in Guatemala, Benary Chile Ltd. in Hijuelas, and an extensive network of distribution partners across the United States, Canada, Europe and other regions. Its “BeGreen” initiative commits the company to sustainable production, resource conservation and social responsibility, while the Heart of Benary Fund provides long-term support for a children’s medical clinic in Guatemala. In 2018 the in-house research laboratory was spun off as XCellent Lab GmbH & Co. KG, offering breeding technology services to third-party clients.
