About Australian Native Plants
Australian Native Plants was established in the early 1990s by Jo O’Connell, a native of Sydney, Australia, together with her husband Byron Cox. Drawing on her horticultural heritage, Jo built the nursery into the largest selection of Australian plants available anywhere in the United States.
Plant Collection
The nursery maintains an extensive collection featuring Acacia, Banksia, Eucalyptus, Hakea, Leptospermum, Pittosporum, and Protea species, among many others. Each year, Jo travels to Australia to source new plant material, importing seeds and tissue-cultured plants to expand the offerings. The nursery’s guiding criteria—hardiness, drought tolerance, cut flower production, and bird-attracting qualities—ensure every plant earns its place in California gardens.
Business Model
The nursery operates as a specialist grower, serving landscape architects, designers, contractors, other nurseries, and cut flower growers on a wholesale basis. Consultation services are available for both commercial and residential projects. Visits to the growing grounds are available by appointment Monday through Friday, ensuring personalized attention for each visitor.
