About the Project

De Kleine Plantage (“The Small Planter’s Garden”) is a family plant nursery and database from the village of Eenrum in the province of Groningen, in the north of the Netherlands. It was long regarded as one of Europe’s most influential small specialist perennial growers, with a core focus on perennials (vaste planten) and supporting ranges of annuals and tender plants, ornamental grasses, ferns, clematis and roses. The physical nursery stopped active plant production in July 2022, but the project continues today as a reference database and a small garden-design practice.

From Nursery to Reference Library

The site first went online in 2009 as a digital catalogue of the perennials, grasses, ferns, clematis and roses that the nursery was growing and selling. After production closed in 2022, the project was relaunched as a reference and inspiration resource: the plant catalogue is preserved, the search function and downloadable symbols sheets still work, and the design side of the business continues. Garden designers Fleur van Zonneveld and Eric Spruit now lead the project, taking on private garden design and planting-plan work under the same brand.

Plant Database and Catalogue

The database holds several thousand cultivated varieties, organised into a few main lines — perennials, annuals and tender plants, ornamental grasses, ferns, clematis and roses — each with a full A–Z list and a working search. Each entry carries a brief cultivation note, a set of standardised symbols (sun, soil, hardiness, height, flowering season) and a downloadable PDF planting sheet. Visitors can filter by flowering time, mature height, soil type, sun exposure and hardiness zone, and use the plant lists as the starting point for their own garden plans. The database has been maintained by the same in-house team since 2009, making it one of the most-cited small independent perennial references for the European DIY gardening community.

Design Service and Co-Housing

The design practice is run by Fleur van Zonneveld and Eric Spruit and works as a full package: a site visit and client brief, a master plan with hard-landscape layout, and a detailed planting plan listing every species, cultivar and quantity. Project examples are published on the site as a portfolio for browsing visitors, while the actual design work is taken on by appointment. The planting plans are built directly on the nursery’s own database, so each species already carries hardiness, sun, soil and height information ready to hand off to a contractor or garden centre. On the same site as the former nursery, the team has also helped build a small co-housing community called Woonerf De Plantage: in addition to the founders’ own house, eight contemporary homes are already in place and a ninth will be built in 2026. Residents range from young children to people in their eighties, and they share the day-to-day care of the surrounding garden — keeping the historic planting scheme of the nursery alive in a living residential setting.

Articles, Newsletter and Archives

A separate content side of the site carries articles, literature references and a regular newsletter, with topics ranging from perennial plant combinations to garden history, European flower shows and small-nursery open days. Year-on-year archives of themed open days, fair appearances and public events are kept searchable for visitors who want to look back at past projects. Although the project no longer sells plants, the database and design service together keep De Kleine Plantage cited as a reliable small independent reference for European domestic-garden design.
