Nursery profile

Garden Gate Nursery (Garden Gate Nursery LLC) is a wholesale container tree nursery selling to landscape contractors, cities and retail nurseries. Stock falls into four groups: shade trees, ornamentals, conifers and street trees. Names that show up often in the catalog include Acer x freemanii ‘Jeffersred’, Acer rubrum ‘Frank Jr.’ P.A.F., Gleditsia triacanthos ‘JFS GMorgenson1’ and Betula nigra ‘Dickinson’.

From hay fields to a tree farm

Everett Wray and Sandra Wray started the nursery. They had run a family dairy farm in Kansas, then grew alfalfa hay in Washington. On a drive in 2005 they talked about doing something different, and Everett proposed the name Garden Gate; the tagline came out of the same conversation. They planted three rows of trees that year to learn the trade, shipped their first order in July 2006, and have supplied landscapers and retail nurseries ever since.

Two growing locations

The nursery farms in two places. The main one is in Pasco, Washington, in the Columbia Basin Tri-Cities area. Since 2013 most conifers have been grown at a second location in Boring, Oregon, in the Willamette Valley, where the climate suits evergreens. Shipping reaches Washington, Oregon and Idaho and goes as far as Montana, with customers around Spokane, Seattle, Olympia, Portland, Bend, Boise and Coeur d’Alene.

How the container trees are grown

Everything is grown in containers rather than balled-and-burlapped stock. Trees sit in a bark-based mix, which makes them lighter than B&B stock, easier to handle, plantable in tight spots and schedulable year-round. Stock arrives as two-year bare-root trees and stays in the container one to seven more years. By the nursery’s own account a tree has been alive about 5 years from cutting to customer, moved several times between two or three nurseries in two states, with staking and disease management along the way; planted and watered correctly, survival runs close to 100%.

Ordering, delivery and customers

Wholesale price lists sit behind a password; the public page carries a monthly availability file with no prices. Long-distance delivery needs room at the drop site for a 50-foot trailer, while local delivery in the Tri-Cities runs at a fixed low cost. The nursery does not cover trees that die after planting, but it guarantees them healthy on leaving the farm, and buyers have 14 days to report a nursery-related problem. There is no walk-in retail day to day; appointments run in spring and fall, plus occasional open-to-the-public days for Tri-Cities homeowners. Google reviews are all five stars, with plenty of remarks about healthy stock and helpful staff.
