National Botanic Garden of Wales
Overview
The National Botanic Garden of Wales is situated in Carmarthenshire, just 10 minutes from the M4 motorway and 2 minutes from the A48. Opened in May 2000, we were the first national botanic garden to be created in the new millennium. Spanning over 500 acres, the Garden combines a historic Regency landscape with award-winning gardens and a fascinating nature reserve.
The National Botanic Garden of Wales is a charity dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in the science of plants and related subjects, and the conservation of plant species, especially those in Wales, Great Britain and the Western European Seaboard.
Key Attractions
The Great Glasshouse houses some of the most endangered plants on the planet, representing six areas of the world: California, Australia, the Canary Islands, Chile, South Africa, and the Mediterranean Basin. This makes it one of the largest single-span glasshouses in the Northern Hemisphere.
The Gruffalo Trail offers a magical journey through the deep, dark wood with amazing hand-crafted carvings of the beloved story characters. The British Bird of Prey Centre is the only facility in the UK dedicated solely to native species of birds of prey.
Research and Conservation
The Garden contributes internationally to plant DNA barcoding and is a national asset for plant, fungi and pollinator research. Our Science Centre contains a molecular lab dedicated to DNA barcoding and conservation genetics research, along with our National Seed Bank, library, archives and herbarium.
We work in collaboration with universities, research institutes, botanic gardens, plant conservation charities and government bodies to develop effective partnerships for biodiversity research at the genetic, species, and ecosystem levels.
Education and Community
Our Education and Science Teams provide downloadable resources for home or classroom use, designed to inspire nature-based learning. Programs include the Welsh Wildlife Name Game and Insect and Plant Associations activities.
The Garden buzzes with life throughout the seasons, with numerous bee and butterfly species calling the Garden home, including Red-tailed bumblebees, Common carder bees, and Long-horned bees.
Awards and Recognition
The National Botanic Garden of Wales has achieved numerous accolades since opening:
