Svenska Rhododendronsällskapet

协会同时是 Fritidsodlingens Riksorganisation(瑞典休闲园艺全国联合会)的成员组织。

每年 11 至 12 月发布的 Frölistan(种子清单)是协会最受会员欢迎的活动之一,会员可申请列表中的物种与会员杂交种子;清单上常标 OP(开放授粉)、CP(控制授粉)、HP(人工授粉)、CW(野外采集)等缩写。

系统学专栏由 Roberto Lesti 主笔:Davidian 1980 年代所著《The Rhododendron Species》收录约 1000 种,Pocket Guide to Rhododendron Species(McQuire 与 Robinson, 2009)将之归为 elepidota、azalea、lepidota 三大群;Cox 兄弟的《The Encyclopedia of Rhododendron Species》进一步把种类数目减至约一半,瑞典条件下约 200 种可户外栽培。

Organisation Profile and History

Svenska Rhododendronsällskapet (SRS) was founded in 1970 with the aim of spreading interest and knowledge about rhododendrons — covering cultivation, ecology, plant geography, companion planting and horticultural history. SRS is a member of Fritidsodlingens Riksorganisation, the Swedish national federation for leisure gardening. The society publishes the quarterly journal Rhododanderbladet, runs the annual seed exchange, organises a rhododendron market in spring and coordinates photography competitions and open-garden visits. Day-to-day work is carried out by a board of about ten trustees plus two deputies.

Board and Two Regional Chapters

The current board comprises Johan Bonde (chair), Torsten Karlsson (vice-chair), Carl-Magnus Pettersson (treasurer), Johan Weden (secretary), Carina Lind and Kerstin Pettersson as ordinary members, and Johan Mattsson as deputy. Lotta Tapper and Göran Bergh form the nomination committee. The society runs two regional chapters: Västsvenska (West) meets during winter at the Botanical Institute of Göteborgs botaniska trädgård (Gothenburg Botanical Garden) and hosts the annual market on the island of Tjörn in April, drawing members from Halland and most of Västra Götaland; Östsvenska (East) currently has no fixed venue and announces each event individually. According to the statutes § 12 and § 13, the annual general meeting must be held before the end of June and the venue is rotated between chapter regions.

Journal Rhododendronbladet and Seed Exchange

Rhododendronbladet appears four times a year and features species articles, hybrid profiles, travel reports and contributions from sister societies in the United States and Scandinavia. The Frölistan (seed list) is released each November–December; members may order as many taxa as they wish, with abbreviations OP (open-pollinated), CP (controlled), HP (hand-pollinated) and CW (collected in the wild) marking the origin of each lot. SRS works with SyRMS to widen the offering. The spring market on Tjörn is prepared at Lussemötet, where the list of cultivars is finalised; the 2022 market offered around 50 cultivars and roughly 300 plants sourced from the German nurseries Hobbie and Schnupper Baumschule. SRS also takes part in Nordiska trädgårdar, the Nordic garden fair.

Cultivation Knowledge and Taxonomy

The cultivation pages on the website are based on notes from experienced growers such as Tommy Johansson, covering site selection, acidic substrates with pH 4.5–5.5, compost recipes and root-zone moisture, supplemented by Lars-Olof Tunbrå on substrate chemistry and Bernt Nilsson’s blötbädd (wet bed) construction at Halmstad. Roberto Lesti maintains the taxonomy section: Davidian’s 1980s work The Rhododendron Species listed around 1,000 species, McQuire & Robinson’s Pocket Guide to Rhododendron Species (2009) grouped them into elepidota, azalea and lepidota divisions, and Peter and Kenneth Cox’s Encyclopedia of Rhododendron Species reduced the total to roughly half, with around 200 considered outdoor-hardy in Sweden. The site also lists 32 hybrid groups recorded by SKUD, including Yakushimanum, Wardii, Williamsianum, Fortunei and Japanska Azalea.

International Cooperation and Member Services

SRS maintains a long-standing partnership with the American Rhododendron Society (ARS): members can join ARS at a discounted rate and receive its journal, seed exchange and digital lectures. Annual membership fees are 220 SEK plus 50 SEK per chapter; members living outside Sweden pay an additional 100 SEK to cover overseas postage of Rhododendronbladet. Fees are paid into the society’s postal giro account PG 62 83 00-6. Membership benefits include access to the photography competition, open-garden visits, regional meetings, the spring market and the annual general meeting. Member services are handled by Medlemsansvarig Kerstin Pettersson and processed through the Medlemssidan (members’ page).
