Location & Setting
South Coast Gardens sits at St. Williams in Norfolk County, Ontario, along the central Lake Erie shoreline in the Carolinian Forest Region. Winters here push into USDA hardiness zone 6a/6b, and the sandy, moisture-retaining soils mark roughly the northern edge where Magnolias, Sweetgum, Bald Cypress and many ericaceous plants can still be trialed. The nursery and display garden share the same property, so visitors see how each species actually behaves in local conditions rather than only reading about it.
Owner & Team
The owner, Kevin Kavanagh, spent most of his early career in conservation work with World Wildlife Fund Canada and Nature Conservancy Canada, helping develop their stewardship and habitat protection programs. He now assists Birds Canada with the Gardening for Birds initiative and coordinates the Gardening for Nature program with the Grand Erie Master Gardeners. Kevin keeps a wildlife log on the property that has recorded more than 230 bird species to date. Evan Sinclair, Aidan Young, Dylan Cowan and Sherry Black-Shrubb round out the team that runs the nursery day to day.
Plant Lines
The nursery focuses on native and near-native plants, with a secondary line of azaleas, rhododendrons and a handful of choice garden plants. Inventory includes trees, shrubs, perennials, ferns and grasses, around 350 species and varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas, and a small selection of frost-hardy sub-tropical plants for outdoor container gardens that carry colour from spring into early November. The nursery does not sell plants known to be invasive in surrounding natural areas — Norway Maple, Barberries, Burning Bush and Lily-of-the-Valley among them — and is happy to suggest native substitutes for garden designs.
Display Garden & Bloom Season
The first beds were planted in 2006 and have been expanding every year since. The display garden is laid out so visitors can compare local natives with Southern species being observed for cold hardiness, including Southern Magnolia, Sweetbay Magnolia, Sweetgum, Bald Cypress, Alabama Snow-wreath, Willow Oak and Sourwood. Bloom begins in late April with the first Magnolias and rhododendrons and runs through to late October with Asters and Witch Hazel, drawing butterflies and birds throughout the season.
Services & Hours
The nursery offers garden consultation, garden design, plant selection and identification, and gives talks to horticultural societies and community groups with a focus on naturalising gardens. The 2025 season opens Thursday May 1: May runs Thursday through Sunday, June through September Thursday through Saturday, and October Friday and Saturday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Pick-ups at other times can be arranged with at least 24 hours notice by email. The nursery and gardens are on the north side of the road at St. Williams in Norfolk County, Ontario (postal code N0E 1P0).
