Darrow
苗圃前身为 USDA 退休遗传学家 Dr. George M. Darrow 1957 年在马里兰州创办的 Olallie Farm,他自 USDA 离职后开始收集并杂交萱草,以西海岸原住民语 “Olallie” (意为 “place where berries are found”) 为农场与所有自育萱草命名前缀。1993 年 Dr. Darrow 入列 ASHS (American Society for Horticultural Science) 名人堂第 8 位,与孟德尔、Liberty Hyde Bailey、Luther Burbank 等并列。

Three Generations of the Darrow Family in Vermont
Olallie Daylily Gardens is a three-generation family daylily farm located in South Newfane, southern Vermont, in the foothills of the Green Mountains. The farm traces its lineage to Dr. George M. Darrow, a USDA geneticist who retired in 1957 and began collecting and hybridizing daylilies on his Maryland farm, which he named “Olallie” after a west-coast Native American word meaning “Place Where Berries Are Found.” In 1993 Dr. Darrow was inducted into the ASHS Hall of Fame as its eighth member, joining Mendel, Liberty Hyde Bailey, and Luther Burbank. Every Olallie-bred cultivar carries the Olallie prefix.
South Newfane Landscape and Seasonal Phenology
In 1979 Dr. Darrow invited his son Dan, daughter-in-law Ellen, and grandson Christopher to dig up every section of his daylily collection and transplant it to the family’s Vermont farm. By 1980 Olallie North was established. Dan (1928-2003) handled the physical build-out while Ellen (1933-2023) shaped the garden aesthetic and artistic identity. Today the farm is managed by third-generation Christopher (Chris) Darrow, with help from Ellen, his children Quinn and Anwyn, and his dog Brom. 2026 marks the farm’s 35th year in business in Vermont and Chris’s 44th year working with daylilies.
Hardy Daylily Specialty and Organic Cultivation
The collection holds over 2,500 daylily cultivars with new selections added each year. Plants are selected for color, hardiness, vigor, and performance. The six-acre main field is laid out with grass walkways, picnic tables, benches, and market umbrellas. Beyond daylilies the farm grows Siberian Iris, Hosta, Helleborus, native Hemerocallis species, and other perennials, plus more than 400 highbush blueberry bushes for pick-your-own from mid July through August. All production is organic — no chemical sprays, only water, natural fertilizers, and hand weeding.
Visiting and Hours
Bloom season runs from June through September, with peak display in July and August when tens of thousands of daylilies open. Peak-season visitors are welcome seven days a week. Chris continues Dr. Darrow’s hybridizing philosophy, focusing on extra-early bloomers, extra-tall scapes, pigmented scapes, and other overlooked traits. The farm runs a “Name A Daylily” program that lets visitors name a new seedling, with registration through the American Hemerocallis Society. Plants are dug, packed, and shipped by hand the same day for in-season U.S. orders.
