育种团队对成千上万株杂交幼苗进行了接种鉴定和田间复筛,最终留下 4 个抗性稳定、长势各异的杂交种,分别命名为 Buxus Renaissance(HER2009B01)、Buxus Babylon Beauty(HER2010B04)、Buxus Heritage(HER2010B02)和 Buxus Skylight(HER2009B03),共同使用 BetterBuxus® 品牌对外推广。

Boxwood Blight and the Start of a Breeding Programme

Boxwood blight, caused by Calonectria pseudonaviculata (formerly Cylindrocladium), has become a steadily worsening problem across European gardens over the past decade, and conventional fungicide regimes alone are no longer enough to keep historic plantings clean. To find a more durable answer, the Belgian nursery Herplant began a boxwood breeding programme in 2007 together with ILVO, the Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, with classical crosses backed by DNA research to stabilise disease resistance.

Four Decades of Herplant and a DNA-based Collection

Herplant BVBA is a specialist nursery for Buxus and Taxus, founded in 1985 by the three Hermans brothers Didier, Louis and Luc, and has been focused on them as a nursery stock since the early 1990s. Before launching the programme the team had already assembled more than 200 Buxus species and cultivars, drawing on material from European botanical gardens and boxwood collectors around the world, and had mapped growth rate, hardiness, leaf colour, leaf shape, winter colour and disease response for every entry to inform later hybrid combinations.

Four Resistant Hybrids and European Plant Breeders’ Rights

Tens of thousands of hybrid seedlings were inoculated with fungal spores and screened in the field, and only four stable, well-performing crosses were kept: Buxus Renaissance (HER2009B01), Buxus Babylon Beauty (HER2010B04), Buxus Heritage (HER2010B02) and Buxus Skylight (HER2009B03), all marketed under the BetterBuxus® brand. All four are registered for European plant breeders’ rights (CPVO) and may not be propagated without permission, with Herplant keeping full control of production for the first few years.

An Exclusive Distributor Network and Historic Garden Use

BetterBuxus® plants are not sold on the open market and are instead distributed through a network of exclusive partners that has so far been built up in Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and Poland, with specialist names such as Arboretum Kalmthout included. According to the programme’s own figures, more than 50 historic or premium gardens have already replaced older, susceptible boxwood with BetterBuxus® hybrids in hedges, parterres, topiary and public green projects.

Reducing Fungicide Use and Continuing Research

The central promise of BetterBuxus® is that fungicide use can be reduced to a minimum, which makes boxwood shaping more workable again for private gardens, public green spaces and historic landscapes. The company runs buxuscare.com as a side project aimed at gardeners and grounds staff, with practical notes on pruning, feeding, planting and disease recognition. Herplant also states openly that the breeding work is continuing and that further, more adaptable hybrids are being worked on for the next round of releases.
