About the Garden
Tanglewood Wild Garden sits in Newbridge, east of Penzance in West Cornwall, a few hundred metres off the A3071 St Just road. The roughly nine-acre site has been tended by the same retired couple, Kerry and Tony Marr, for more than twenty-five years (since 2001), and is run as a small, deliberately informal family garden on England’s far south-western peninsula.
The whole garden is managed on a “wilder by design” principle: there are no formal flower beds, and brambles, nettles and thistles are thought of as habitat rather than weeds. Native trees, shrubs and wetland plants share the ground with the more unusual exotics Kerry has coaxed along, so the visitor experience is closer to a managed nature reserve than to a typical ornamental garden.
History and Ponds
Tanglewood began in 2001 when Kerry and Tony took on a bramble-covered piece of land. What was imagined as a ten-year side project has, twenty-five years on, become a permanent landscape. Tony is a retired farrier with forty-five years in the trade and provides most of the muscle behind pond digging, path-building and timber work; Kerry is a retired nurse and midwife who looks after the more unusual plants on the site.
The ponds came in stages. The first pond was dug in 2002, followed by the Bridge Pond in 2003 and the Kingfisher Pond in 2004, with the fourth, Golden Pond, completed in 2013. Together with the surrounding boggy margins, the four ponds form the core of the garden’s wildlife habitat: mallards, moorhens, kingfishers and herons are regulars, while dragonflies, damselflies, frogs, toads and newts use the water, and the surrounding edges are visited by woodpeckers, owls, squirrels, rabbits and the occasional badger.
Layout and Wildlife
A single main path loops through the garden, with benches placed at intervals so visitors can stop and sit. The four ponds are the visual and ecological focus of the route: the original pond is the deepest, the Bridge Pond sits beneath the wooden footbridge, the Kingfisher Pond is the most reliable spot for kingfishers, and Golden Pond is the most recent, with the densest marginal planting. Native and introduced plants are mixed throughout, and a few flowering trees mark the woodland edge.
Because the site is intentionally kept natural, paths, pond margins and a few slopes are rough underfoot, and visitors with mobility questions are asked to get in touch before visiting. A clearing near the treehouse hosts a giant outdoor chess set (giant lawn chess), one of the most popular features for younger visitors and group visits.
Visiting
The garden is open seasonally, from the start of the Easter holidays through 30 September, Monday to Tuesday and Thursday to Sunday 10am to 5:30pm, closed on Wednesdays; last entry is at 4pm. Admission is £6 for adults, £3 for children, free for under-5s; a single season ticket is £35, a family ticket (two adults and two children) is £55. Cash and card are both accepted, but cash is preferred. Parking is free, dogs on leads are welcome, picnics are encouraged (no BBQs, no litter bins, please take everything home), and compost toilets are on site.
The Cake Hut, run by Kerry, is open on Saturdays and Sundays 11am to 3:30pm during the season. To find the garden, take the A3071 from Penzance towards St Just, go through the village of Newbridge and turn left towards Sancreed; the woods are about 500 yards on the left, marked by a Squirrel sign. The what3words reference is expired.upcoming.eternally. Group visits, children’s parties, gardening clubs and photography groups can be arranged by contacting the garden in advance via the website.
Family and Community
The garden is fundamentally a family project. Tony’s forty-five-year career as a farrier provided the practical skills behind the ponds, the wooden footbridges, the seating and the woodland paths, as well as the wood-carved pieces and walking sticks sold on site. Kerry’s nursing and midwifery background sits behind the more unusual plants, and her home baking runs the Cake Hut at weekends.
Tanglewood has never really been “finished”, and that is part of the point. Marginal planting shifts and re-establishes, new natural regeneration appears under the canopy each year, and Tony has, in his own words, plenty more ideas that he simply has not thought of yet. Group visits, children’s parties, gardening circles and photography groups can all be arranged by contacting the garden in advance.
