Chicago Botanic Garden

An Urban Horticultural Oasis

The Chicago Botanic Garden, located in Glencoe, Illinois, sits on the ancestral homelands of the Skokie Marsh. Operated by the Chicago Horticultural Society—founded in 1890 with the motto “Urbs in Horto” (city in a garden)—the Garden opened to the public in 1972 and now encompasses 385 acres across 28 distinct gardens, 4 natural areas, 9 islands, and approximately 6 miles of lakeshore. Its mission: “We cultivate the power of plants to sustain and enrich life.”

Signature Gardens

The Garden features 28 distinctive gardens: the Japanese Garden (Sansho-En), designed by Dr. Koichi Kawana in 1975 and dedicated in 1982, now named the Elizabeth Hubert Malott Japanese Garden; the Helen and Richard Thomas English Walled Garden, designed by British landscape designer John Brookes and dedicated in 1991; and the Model Railroad Garden, with 19 G-scale model train tracks winding through more than 300 plant varieties. The Butterflies & Blooms enclosure, open from late May through Labor Day, houses hundreds of tropical butterfly species native to Illinois and beyond. The Rose Garden, Landscape Garden, and Native Plant Garden offer additional horticultural splendor.

Science & Learning

The Garden houses 9 research laboratories supporting scientists and graduate students in extensive plant science research. The Plant Science Center, designed by Booth Hansen, opened in 2009. The garden’s research library holds 110,000+ volumes—one of North America’s most significant collections of rare botanical literature. The Regenstein School provides lifelong learning programs, the Negaunee Institute advances plant science research, and the Windy City Harvest program promotes urban agriculture. The Chicago Botanic Garden has the highest membership of any botanical garden in the United States.
