Overview

SUTTON’s Iris Gardens is a family-run commercial bearded iris nursery established in 1984 in Meridian, Idaho, USA. The nursery sells rhizomes by mail within the United States and accepts international orders from Canada, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and other permitted regions.

About the Nursery

Founded by Mike and Connie Sutton, the nursery is now operated by the second generation of the Sutton family, including Brandon and Chelsea, Shelby and Andrew. Located in the Treasure Valley on Chinden Boulevard (Highway 20/26) between Star Road and Can-Ada Road, the farm has supplied bearded iris to gardeners for more than four decades. The ongoing seedling program focuses on reblooming habit, ruffled form and novel color patterns, building on hybridizing work from world-renowned breeders.

New Introductions and Display Garden

The 2026 catalogue features new bearded iris introductions from renowned hybridizers Anton Mego, Gary Slagle and Bill Tyson, with striking colors, refined form and new patterns integrated into high-quality hybrids. Additional display beds have been added on the home field to showcase the hundreds of bearded iris varieties grown on the property. The display garden is open to the public from Monday May 11 to Wednesday May 27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed on Sundays. Visitors are encouraged to call ahead for current bloom conditions and parking updates due to highway work at the entrance this season.

Iris Care Guide

Bearded iris are among the easiest of garden plants to grow. Plant rhizomes in July, August or September, allowing at least six weeks for roots to establish before the first hard frost. Choose a site with at least half a day of sun and good drainage; raised beds or slopes are ideal. Prepare heavy soil by adding humus, coarse sand or rice hulls. Set rhizomes so the tops are slightly exposed and the fans (leaves) remain above the soil surface, since planting too deep is the most common cause of rot. Apply a 6-10-10 fertilizer about six weeks before spring bloom and again after fall planting; rebloomers benefit from a third application immediately after spring bloom. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers and incorporate alfalfa pellets around newly planted iris for stronger growth.

Ordering and Shipping

New season orders open each January, with rhizomes hand-dug and shipped in July and August via UPS or USPS within the United States. The minimum domestic order is 15 USD plus shipping. International orders are accepted from Canada, all of Europe, Kazakhstan, Japan, Chile, Romania and Denmark, as well as Taiwan, South Korea and South Africa with the required import permits; the international minimum order is 100 USD. Early ordering is recommended because popular varieties may sell out before shipping begins, and the nursery will substitute equal or greater value when stocks are short unless otherwise instructed.
