Company Overview

Johnny’s Selected Seeds is a privately held, employee-owned seed producer and merchant headquartered in Winslow, Maine, USA. The company was founded in 1973 by Rob Johnston, Jr., who, at the age of 22 and with $500 in savings, started the fledgling seed business in a New Hampshire farmhouse attic. The company relocated to a former dairy farm in Albion, Maine, in 1975 and moved its headquarters to Winslow in late 2002. In 2006, the founder and his wife Janika Eckert transferred 100% of the company stock to an Employee Stock Ownership Trust; Johnny’s now operates as a 100% employee-owned business, with over 200 full-time and 50 seasonal employees. Albion Research Farm remains the center of the company’s breeding and trialing work, with about 40 acres under cultivation, and the company also operates the Johnny’s Catalog Store in Winslow, Maine.

Product Lines and Business Scope

Johnny’s functions simultaneously as a plant breeder and as a multichannel retailer of seeds, plants, tools, and supplies, serving both commercial growers and home gardeners in the United States and internationally. The flagship catalog covers five major divisions—vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruits, and microgreens—encompassing several hundred species and well over one thousand named cultivars; notable depth exists in tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, squash, cucurbits, brassicas, alliums, and sweet corn. In addition to the seed catalog, the company breeds and trials proprietary varieties at its Albion farm, runs a seed-testing laboratory, and operates state-of-the-art cold seed storage in Winslow. Every product is backed by a 100% germination guarantee that has been a hallmark of the company since its earliest years.

History and Founder’s Vision

The company’s origin story is rooted in Johnston’s experience at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he helped start the Yellow Sun Food Cooperative, and in a 1972 communal truck farm in southern New Hampshire, where he first encountered the difficulty of sourcing Asian vegetable seeds for specialty produce. Subsequent collaboration in 1973–1974 with corn breeder Dr. Walton Galinat and Professor Elwin Meader of the University of New Hampshire led to the launch of Johnny’s own plant-breeding program, and in 1975 the company settled on its present Albion farm. Johnny’s launched its first e-commerce website in the spring of 1995, making it one of the earliest independent North American seed companies to adopt online direct-to-customer retail.

Mission and Community Engagement

Johnny’s mission statement reads: “Our mission is helping families, friends, and communities to feed one another by providing superior seeds, tools, information, and service.” The company has long focused on short-season and cool-climate gardening, providing detailed growing information in its catalogs that is written in-house by its breeders and agronomists, and supporting seed-saving through publications such as Growing Garden Seeds. Johnny’s also partners with organic and sustainable agriculture organizations, participates in MOFGA organic certification, and runs community gardening programs that extend the company’s reach from the research farm to local food systems.
