(Technology Innovator of the Year)
Company History and the Kelowna Facility
AgriForest Bio-Technologies was founded in 1984 in Kelowna, in British Columbia’s Okanagan region. Its original mission was to supply tissue-cultured dwarf fruit tree rootstocks to local orchardists. From a research-driven start in plant micropropagation, the nursery has grown into a roughly twelve-acre operation with dedicated tissue culture laboratories, acclimatization greenhouses and cold-storage shipping facilities, and is now one of the larger tissue culture plant suppliers in North America.
Product Range and Core Business
Alongside the original dwarf fruit tree rootstocks, the catalogue now covers shade trees, ornamental shrubs, roses, clematis, lilacs, Saskatoon berries, Haskap and honeyberry selections, and nutraceutical plants. Annual production is over one million tissue-cultured plants, sold wholesale to nurseries, orchardists, garden centres and commercial growers across Canada and the northern United States.
Tissue Culture Technology and Quality Advantages
Compared with conventionally propagated stock, AgriForest tissue culture plants are guaranteed disease-free, develop a more fibrous root system free of rot, branch more densely, grow more vigorously after transplanting and establish with a higher survival rate. An in-house research and development department continually trials new varieties for tissue culture, while production stays aligned with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) framework, with every shipment checked for pathogen status and varietal trueness-to-type.
Wholesale Channels and Customer Base
The wholesale division serves nurseries, garden centres, commercial orchards and farm operations. Orders can be placed through the Order Form on the website, and pricing and availability are also handled by phone and email. Customers span the Canadian Prairies, interior British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada, together with the U.S. Upper Midwest, New England, the northern Pacific Northwest and the Rocky Mountain region. Buyers receive written guidance on variety origin (including the University of Saskatchewan breeding program, Lidia R. Delafield Stuart’s Berries Unlimited selections, and Japanese and Polish lines) and pollination pairing.
Recent Awards and Industry Partnerships
AgriForest received CAD 100,000 and third place in the 2009 BC Innovation Council Commercialization of Agricultural Technology (CAT) competition. In 2019 the company received funding from the Canada-BC AgriInnovation Program to produce disease-free hazelnut plants. It accepted the Excellence in Agriculture award at the 2022 Kelowna Chamber Business Excellence Awards and was a 2023 finalist in both the Technology Innovator of the Year and overall Business Excellence categories. Also in 2023, the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) provided CAD 187,980 in advisory services and funding for crop innovation.
