Association Overview
The Master Gardeners Association of Alberta (MGAA), formed in 2011, is a registered provincial non-profit society headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Its membership is open to Alberta residents who have completed a Master Gardener Educational Program recognized by the Association, including certificates obtained out-of-province. The Association works in cooperation with the Calgary Horticultural Society and the Edmonton Horticultural Society, positioning MGAA as the central provincial node within the broader Canadian Master Gardener volunteer network.
Governance and Four Objectives
MGAA is governed by four primary objectives: assisting Master Gardeners in enhancing their continuing education, connecting Master Gardeners across Alberta and with other provincial Master Gardener associations in Canada, providing ways for the wider community to interact with Master Gardeners and learn about volunteer opportunities, and creating consistent definitions of the rights and responsibilities of those bearing the Master Gardener title. Affiliated organizations in Alberta include the Calgary Horticultural Society, Edmonton Horticultural Society, Alberta Native Plant Council, Alberta Mycological Society, Alberta Invasive Plant Council, Edmonton Naturalization Group and Plant Watch, while inter-provincial peer associations include the Atlantic Master Gardeners Association, the Manitoba Master Gardener Association, the Master Gardeners Association of BC, the Master Gardeners of Ontario and the Master Gardeners of Ottawa-Carleton.
Master Gardener Educational Programs Directory
The Association itself does not directly deliver basic Master Gardener training; instead it maintains an authoritative directory of provincial Master Gardener Educational Programs recognized by MGAA. Current recognized programs include the Calgary Horticultural Society Master Gardener Program (2025/2026 cohort running Saturdays from October 18 to April 18, delivered in person at Bethany Chapel in Calgary and online via Zoom), the Parkland County Organic Master Gardener Program at Stony Plain (Alberta’s first and most extensive organic and regenerative Master Gardener program, run under Red Brick Common from January to October with a six-acre field site), and the Dalhousie University Master Gardener Training Program (fully online, self-paced, regionally tailored for Alberta, with continuous intake and tuition of CAD 488 per course).
Three Pillars and Public Activities
MGAA structures its ongoing member engagement around the three pillars of Opportunities to Learn, Opportunities to Connect and Opportunities to Grow. The Association hosts workshops, tours and speaker programs on topics requested by members (many open to the public), maintains relationships with peer horticultural societies, and helps position Master Gardeners as visible public resources through the “Ask a Master Gardener” question-answering program at horticultural events across the province. The Association publishes a curated resource list of 30 drought-tolerant and bee-friendly plants suited to Alberta growing conditions, and it serves as a self-regulatory body for the Master Gardener title in the province.
Membership Tiers, Fees and Volunteer Reporting
Membership is structured in three categories. Active Members (CAD 40 per year, prorated to CAD 20 after June, including voting and office-holding rights) must report annual volunteer hours since 2019. Student Members (CAD 10 per year while enrolled in a recognized MGAA-accepted program) enjoy attendance rights but no voting rights, with benefits expiring December 31 of the year of program completion. Honorary Members are appointed by the Board for significant contributions. Fees are paid by Interac e-Transfer to treasurer@mgaab.org. The Association accepts donations by e-Transfer to treasurer@mgaab.org or by cheque mailed to P.O. Box 73074, Hampton Post Office, Edmonton, AB T5T 3X1, and currently does not issue tax receipts. The MGAA is supported by Trinity Web Hosting for its not-for-profit website infrastructure.
